Regarding the black arm band debate for the faint hearted I would stay away from the politics.ie board some of the tribal point scoring is really disrespectful
Not going to get bogged down on the youth team arguements because I think its been done to death on slugger, as for joint bids I think during this economic climate they are a more realistic option. Note also none of the big FA’s (spain, italy, england, germany etc) seem interested – bit strange!
Mick regarding the all ireland identity its fairly straight forward. Players from Northern Ireland have always been eligible for the Republic nothing to do with the GFA and many did make the switch. I remember reading that both Irish associations had some sort of gentlemans agreement but dont know how true that was but their definitely was a lack in clarity as to who was eligible for what team so it all remained fairly quiet.. What has brought it all too a head is the IFA going to the CAS and when they lost their case it seemed to clear things up with no more grey area or uncertainty it was crystal clear that Northern born players can indeed declare for the Republic.
Mick Scotland Wales and Republic are struggling to find the stadia as noted earlier, Northern Ireland offers nothing,. infact they would only complicate things more as 3 hosts to qualify seems excessive but 4 I think would be taking the pi$$
Billy McWilliams joke aside for the moment. The thing that has disappointed me the most regarding this bid is the typical negativity and cant do attitude. A load of Irish people just like to moan and couldnt take a once in a lifetime opportunity when it is handed to them on a plate.
So the bid at first glance has some flaws yes but at the same time I dont see many other countries who could offer 6 ready to go stadia over 50000 (only 2 that size are needed). The big problem seems to be the smaller 30000 grounds. Not being funny but its not that diffcult to sort it out with new builds or GAA conversions any expense easily outweighed by the millions that would pour into the economy. So lets all get behind the bid. A shame N.Ireland cant join the party but at the moment we could only offer the redeveloped caesment as the new Windsor will be far too small!
Nordie Northsider you have a point about end game in ulster and Im starting to worry if the author has gone the same way as the horseman, I hope not, Ulster is doomed whether you agreed with the author or not was always well wriiten and I was so happy to find that someone was going to try and continue his work. I know blogs can be time consuming but hope the new guy who ever he is continues and gives us more regular entries with plenty of graphs and charts for us to scrutinize
canisp you seem to think Gretna have been treated well in comparison to Rangers. Lets be honest what does it matter if Rangers completed the season or not they cant win and they wont be allowed in Europe next year so its all for nothing. Unlike Gretna who reformed and started at the bottom of the pile I will be amazed if Rangers 2012 or whatever they will be called are not voted back into the SPL straight away – how fair is that! As for Motherwell being in administration for 2 years by the looks of it Rangers have been in admin for 10 its just no-one bothered to do the sums until now. The SFA may well have been able to give Rangers a little loan if it was a couple of million but 170 and counting – they need another Abramovich and not the little men who have come forward. None of them have the money or are prepared to risk the money needed so why is this saga still going on when we all know it can only end in liquidation!!
I can think of Jude Collins, Mark McGregor, Splintered sunrise, end game in ulster of the top of my head and Im sure Bavarian orange is really a closet shinner
Its only fair that Rangers if not saved by a sugar daddy reform under a new co and start in the lowest league and not the SPL which will inevitably happen. Third Lanark or Clydebank were not given special treatment nor Gretna so why should Rangers be any different. As noted earlier its probably the best thing that could happen so they can re-structure properly and with their fan base they will bounce back a few years later. I dont remember the same save Celtic campaign back in the mid nineties when Celtic were hours from going bust. Fergus MCCann bailed them out at his own expense. There is a big difference with McCann and the guys sniffing around Rangers. McCann had the money and loved the club. From what I see Miller and NG want to make a quick buck.Murray and his blue knights are obviously fans but not such big fans to lose loads of money in the venture. Kennedy is the only genuine guy his problem is it is financilly out of reach for him and he is only chancing his arm with offers – fact is he simply cant afford it!!!

The aftermath of the Saville Inquiry into the events around Bloody Sunday has left me, and I suspect many others, with one enduring image: Prime Minister David Cameron’s apology in the House of Commons, where he says that the actions of the British Army were ‘unjustified and unjustifiable.’ But there’s a lot more to the [...] read our review »
How has Ulster unionism arrived at where it is today – fractured and uncertain, yet dominated electorally by the DUP, a party that tells us it offers unionists sure footing in uncertain times? In his latest book, Ulster’s Last Stand? Reconstructing Unionism after the Peace Process (Irish Academic Press, 2010), Prof. James McAuley from the [...] read our review »
