Comment on Crumlin Road Court House targeted again
on 17 August 2009 at 1:34 am
Nevin,
Planning powers won’t be devolved to local authorities until 2012 when the RPA changes are supposed to kick-in.
Building Control officers can certainly issue Dangerous Structure Notices and the like but they can’t give planning approval, albeit that health n’ safety is often used as an excuse for demoliton without consent, as is ignorance of the law.

Comment on Crumlin Road Court House targeted again
on 17 August 2009 at 12:44 am
The Crumlin Road Courthouse is a listed building and the owner has planning permission for a hotel, although as this didn’t get developed during the boom it was becoming incrwasingly unlikely that it would heppen during the bust.
Nevin; the authorities didn’t sanction the demolition in Ballycastle – it was unauthorised and without permission – but they just couldn’t be assed doing anything about it by way of prosecution. From what I understand the local police even closed the road off to facilitate the demo. diggers which were on site remarkably quickly.
I can’t for the life of me understand why a group of up to 30, presumably from the local area, would
gather to try and destroy one of the most important buildings in their area that could be a future source of employment and even pride. Oh, I forgot, this is Planet Ulster.

You mean Chathom House rules Turgon?
Unionism would have to get over Lundyism first and its state of perpetual siege/defenceness. The first to show “weakness” through compromise usually gets tarred.

But why do so many leave NI to go to college? And at least, why isn’t that balanced by people from elsewhere coming in? There is a net loss to the economy either way.

Mack,
I couldn’t wait to get away when I turned 18. Some reasons: A chance to be independent without having to go running home to mammy every weekend (and the pressure to go to church); the fact that the course I wanted to do wasn’t then available in Norn Iron; the allure of the mainland and living in a less insular society; a perception/urban myth (you decide) that Queen’s was a cold house for people from my kind of background; and wanting to get away from all the sectarin crap (I know it slightly contradicts the last point but I was 18 at the time).

Comment on Belfast Telegraph Editor to retire

Agreed Driftwood.
The Bel Tel has certainly dumbed down more in recent times with too much gossip and tits n’ ass photos. They are also obsessed with the property market which may not be unrelated to their http://www.propertynews.com link and advertising of course.
Unfortunately, when taking stories from sister publications or news releases clearly relating to GB they rarely seem to inject a local angle. Take the recent reporting of the Nationwide house price rises – they didn’t mention the fact that they actually fell back here and it was only those commenting online who actually reported this fact from the original Nationwide document. That certainly doesn’t help credibility.

Mark:
If you want, if you really really want, I would accompany you to Scarva on the 13th (14th)?
I grew up around those parts and know the field well but haven’t been in ages, and nor would I intend to go under normal circumstances.
I would now consider myself a sceptic about the whole thing but I’m certain you’d be surprised by the relative banality and indeed peacefulness of that particular venue.
