Perhaps if Stormont, and the department of education in particular, was making more of an effort to engage with these disaffected young people, groups like this would be unable to attract them into their midst.
But then again, our local politicians have never been a fan of the maxim “prevention is better than cure”. Why should Ms Ruane waste her department’s money when David Ford has a shiny new department that can deal with the problem when they’re all grown up and terrorising their community?
An MYP for two years Danny? You were obviously so aghast at the “pointless facade” that you continued in the position whilst getting ferried around the country to attend various events. Very noble.
Then again complaining about it on slugger now makes up for it I’m sure. Good to see the morality of MYPs is on the same level as that of their expenses fiddling counterparts at westminster.
As far as I’m aware, the Sewell convention doesn’t extend to the youth parliament. So the west Lothian question doesn’t really apply.
They all debate issues which affect the UK as a whole rather than regional issues. There are regional bodies to deal with that (Scottish youth parliament, Funky Dragon and the Northern Ireland Youth forum). Perhaps Westminster should take note.

This was a book that I first reviewed at the same time as “Unionism Decayed” back in 2008. Like Vance’s work, it is the author’s portrayal of a defeated political movement or ideal and as a Unionist it was instructional to read an interpretation of the immediate post-Agreement period from the other side of the fence.
