  1. Comment on Welsh Government to buy Cardiff Airport: What could NI Executive buy or sell?

We could sell rights to the flag pole over City Hall; highest bidder flies flag of their choice.

  2. Comment on After numerous riots & countless illegal road blockades, PSNI announce that they’ve made 40 arrests
    on 14 December 2012 at 10:38 am

Possibly the PSNI are trying to avoid a whole Province wide Drumcree roadblock type situation, by noting who is involved in any illegal acts which may be happening now, then “scooping” the perps at a later date.
Intelligence may suggest to them some within Loyalism are itching for the cops to go in heavy handed, to give them an excuse to crank things up further?

  3. Comment on If Northern Ireland was a Hollywood movie…?
    on 13 December 2012 at 3:57 pm

Flags Of Our Fathers, still directed by Clint Eastwood, but with Belfast City Hall replacing Mount Suribachi, and the iconic photo at the end of the Flag being hoisted on the peak by a flag party of Peter Robinson,Mike Nesbitt, Billy Hutchinson,Jackie McDonald, Willie Frazer and (were there six?)… over the ruins of a building resembling the Reichstag in ’45.

    Counter terrorism as practised by the French Army and tacitly endorsed by high ranking government members in Algeria, picking off FLN leaders too extreme and manouevering those the French could do a deal with into leadership positions, neutralising the troublesome coloniste terrorists of the OAS once the French decided it wasn’t “Algerie Francaise”;
Seems somebody in the.British military intelligence world was closely following the doctrine of Marcel Bigeard.

A perceptive piece which offers the opportunity to take a deep breath and stand back.

  7. Comment on “Not always possible to align the democratic and the retail calendars…”
    on 11 December 2012 at 3:47 pm

Yes the fallout from the flag vote has caused disruption and inconvenience, but people only have a finite amount of money to spend and if they are determined to spend it in Belfast I imagine they will reschedule their shopping trips?

Every year we get the Jeremiah’s from the city centre trades crying woe and thrice woe, blaming the weather, government, roadworks, traffic wardens etc., yet the miracle of Christmas is come Boxing Day there has been an upsurge in trade in the tun up to Christmas, and healthy sales.
Methinks people go on their last splurge when they get their last pre Christmas pay, in my case Friday 21st this year.

  8. Comment on UVF campaign of ‘flying riots’ leaves Unionists isolated…
    on 6 December 2012 at 3:10 pm

To answer Nevin’s post querying what the UDA are doing, the UTV film of the original protest at the back of the City Hall clearly showed at least one prominent Lower Shankill UDA figure carrying the large banner with various flags on it; not sure if this is supported by all UDA “brigades” or a shot across Jackie McDonald’s bows by those opposed to him.

  9. Comment on Will the PSNI and courts apply law impartially and arrest, charge road-blocking loyalists?
    on 6 December 2012 at 7:51 am

There is widespread contempt of the Alliance Party amongst many in both main Unionist parties going back to Alliance being at the forefront of the campaign to bring Unionist councillors to court for non payment of rates in the anti Anglo Irish Agreement era of 1985-87.
Add in the DUP desire to oust Long in East Belfast, and the Loyalist “sans cullottes” outrage over the symbolic lowering of the Union Flag plus the ongoing chipping away at Parades and the perfect storm brews.
One recalls Gerry Adams persistently warning against “demonising” Republicans; well Loyalists have been well and truly demonised by the chattering classes, and it appears some have decided it is payback time.
I also noticed on TV coverage of the City Hall protest, a large Ulster/Independence/Union flag being carried by several “faces” from the Lower Shankill UDA, so it seems so sort of alliance of Loyalists is coalescing here.
The touts have been outed, so I dare say Intelligence figures are concerned at the control or lack of it they have over the emerging situation.
If it seems bad now at the least contentious time of the year, watch and weep when the Parades Commission heap further restrictions/conditions on the parades along main arterial shared space routes like Lower Newtownards Road/Crumlin Road and Upper Donegall Street/Clifton Street.

  10. Comment on Inside a war of words; outside traffic disruption, flag burning, brick throwing and storming the City Hall
    on 4 December 2012 at 7:37 am

Last night we saw the desperation of the Pieds Noir; and those in Metropolitan France will have seen it too- and as De Gaulle uttered “I have heard you”, they “hear” the lack of future of the colonistes.
I see a queue for the boats at Algiers harbour soon.
