McGuinness’ remarks were ludicrous. A United Ireland is well out of the question now given the economic situation of the island with it’s 2 dependant entities.
BTW, has anybody seen the BBC2 programme called ‘The Estate’…. not a good depiction of the Protestant work ethic, morelike
chavland!
I agree that Scotland should be an independent country, but given the current state of international economics I think Scotland is better off remaining within the UK just as is Northern Ireland.
I bet less of an Anglocentric bias to the current Union would appease nationalist Scots instead.
BTW, I am not a Unionist, I adhere to Republican ideals but not the hotch potch Sinn Fein/IRA contrived version.
Besides I don’t think Scotland has the balls to go all the way and pursue full independence. I think some Scots are rather mouthy regarding Scottish independence. Indeed, they can thank the English for a lot of things including their somewhat contrived trappings ie kilts
.
Who will be the Republican nomination for US President? ….Some Religious Right Wing Nut!
ii) Who will be the leader of the UK Labour Party this time next year? …. Balls!
iii) Who will be the leader of Sinn Féin this time next year?……Pearse Doherty! (ahhh… named after Padraig Pearse …the once Religious Right Wing Nut!)
iv) How far will the Republic of Ireland go in the Euro Football? …..Will miss the flight……as some ‘Nordy’ folk hope.
v) How many gold medals will Wales win in the Olympics?…ermmm…None?….. They are ‘British’ medals.
vi) How many countries will be admitted to the UN?….Who Cares!
vii) How many languages will die (to the nearest 5)?….ermmmm 10 … including Gaelic? ……as some ‘Nordy’ folk hope.
viii) What percentage will the 2011 census reveal as People of a Protestant Tradition in NI (the headline number)? (To the nearest 0.5%)……..45% …. but it will be put down as 51% ‘officially’ for the next 10 years and more!
ix) Ditto with any knowledge of Welsh in Wales? errrmmmmm ……. 101%?
x) Who will come second in the Six Nations (Rugby)? Ireland of course as they nearly always do …… well up to recently. BTW the Grand Slam was a one off…it will be another 60 odd years before we win it again.
In any way the ‘Prometheus’ movie trailer looks cool overall and it looks like it will be a good movie next summer.
BTW anyone ever realize that the first onscreen depiction of Ireland in a Sci-Fi futuristic sense is the current comical McDonald’s ad.
We’ve never produced a Sci-Fi writer as such … Horror okay, with Le Fanu and Bram Stoker but no H G Wells etc…
Oh. just thought I’d throw in the great piece of music from the Sci-Fi movie ‘Sunshine’ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQXVzg2PiZw . It was used in the BBC TV series Wonders of the Universe. Vangelis a great influence no doubt.
Also I think the uber machismo Alien 3 which is set on a prison planet was rather cheap to make….. and looked it. Set mainly in the dark it was a cheap and cynical money making sequel. David ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Hollywood remake’ Fincher it’s director.
Also I think Tim Burton’s movies are quite formulaic overall too….with Johnny Depp’s association his movies are becoming more and more dreadful! ie…. Willy Wonky etc….unessessary remake!
…oh and another remake ‘Planet of the Apes’ ,,,,, totally unessessary!
Robinson & Co realise that in the near future they will need support from the Catholic community to maintain their domination in NI politics. With his seemingly rather cold personality he will find it hard to attract such votes. Maybe a future DUP leader with a warmer personality will do the job.
BTW, a surname like Sands demonstrates that the hunger striker came from good ‘Ulster-Scots’ stock.
I’ve been catching up on some reading, recently. Most pleasantly surprised by John Drennan’s latest opus from Gill and Macmillan, Cute Hoors and Pious Protestors… It’s early days yet, but I was struck by this paragraph, part of a dissection of Fianna Fail near the beginning: One of the more fatal consequences of our colonial [...] read our review »
Are you confused about ‘dissident’ Irish Republicanism? Anxious about its existence and its seemingly increasingly deadly capabilities? Martyn Frampton’s new book, Legion of the Rearguard: Dissident Irish Republicanism (Irish Academic Press, 2011) serves both as a primer on active dissident groups and a timely analysis of their historic significance and contemporary capabilities. This book clears [...] read our review »
It’s not published until 3rd March, but one book I recommend you place an advance order for from Slugger’s Bookstore is James Harkin’s Niche. Belfast émigré Harkin examines a number of stories from business, culture and politics and comes to a single insight: everywhere the broad middle is collapsing. He offers Woolworths as an iconic exemplar [...] read our review »

I have to disagree with John above, regarding Alien 4 aka Alien Ressurection which I thought was quite good.
I just hope this new offering won’t be the usual incredible and formulaic set-up …. ladened with faux CGI.
Scot’s movies have become more bland and mainstream Hollywood over the years. Sad for an original director that once gave us Bladerunner too.
