  1. Comment on Omagh. Time for truth.

I voted enthusiastically for the Agreement in 1998, and well-remember a routine afternoon of watching Sports Saturday – I recall George Best being on it! – turning into a late afternoon and evening of unfolding horror.

It, and events like it, are the reason why, while I am prepared to consider that some people got involved in terrorist violence (and, really, planting no-warning or misleading warning car-bombs in town centres, for example, cannot be called anything other than terror) because this has not been a normal society, it’s also why the actions of such people cannot be cause of celebration going-forward.

I, too, hope that all of those affected by the Omagh atrocity that day get the justice they need, want and deserve, but I don’t see it coming, does anyone?

UK media and society does also reflect and include a lot of Irish aspects within it.

  3. Comment on Belfast No 2 District wants to try again: #Ardoyne

… and thousands of people, including thousands of children, are dying of hunger in the world we all share every day.

Yet there is preoccupation here with this load of oul ballix.

WE should be ashamed of ourselves – and STOP indulging those heightening tensions in ANY way.

You have to admire that particular police-officer – hit in the face with an exploding petrol bomb, causing burns to his face …. brief treatment …. than back on duty.

They get much criticism, but I couldn’t do their job.

Guys like that officer: we’re indebted and you should all take a bow.

You have to wonder at the deterrent-value of water-cannon this weather ….

Much as I have often knee-jerked to think that those (on both sides) who say “let me at them” SHOULD be facilitated accordingly, there is no excuse or joy in violence or injury.

Yes, as always, solidarity with the police.

However, I do hope Nigel Dodds is OK – I really don’t want to see anyone being injured in any of these contrived / set-piece situations.

  8. Comment on Has the underplating of local power shifted through the pre 12th talks over Ardoyne?
    on 11 July 2013 at 11:06 pm

I’m talking about all those who would rather have conflict, it’s simply in the blood and DNA.

You can see plenty of culprits literally salivating at the prospect of tension and bother, and palpable relief when discussions come to nothing (as long as the blame for same is with the other side, of course).

    Over-indulged and utterly pathetic.
