   I’m tempted to think that the conservative nature of the membership of the ‘FUP’ felt that a freshly new dad should be helping to look after his new baby, rather than leading a political grouping.

   On the other hand, perhaps there’s some progression evident here when someone with a somewhat controversial private life going way back – something that emerged before the 2010 General Election and made things a bit difficult for him, though he did not hide it – has managed to win the leadership, and with such a massive margin.

   Anyway, I wish him and the party well. Unlikely as it may seem that they will recover, politics here needs an alternative to the DUP (and Sinn Fein).

   I’d say it was a victory for apparent decency and proven-ability over croneysim, revisionist nostalgia for terrorism, religious naivety and general mediocrity.

   Well-done, Michael D.

   After his brief sojourn, perhaps a somewhat chastened DFM will return to devolved UK politics and do a better job form here on in, in unison with the already somewhat chastened FM.

    David Blevins, Sky News Ireland correspondent, on the scene, has just reported that the shooting, which resulted in the wounding of a photographer, came from the republican side…..

    Regardless, one despairs, and this does not look like a police service that is prepared to meet fire with fire, regardless of the culprits are.
