Comment on ‘Temporary’ 50:50 recruitment provisions of the Police (Northern Ireland) Act 2000 to End
on 22 March 2011 at 11:35 pm
Given that the PSNI religious split does not yet show that proper community representation has been achieved I would have thought that a continuation would have been more appropriate for the 50:50. Even a tapering off to the actual community split over a period of time would make sense. Its not as if there wasn’t a quid pro quo in terms of the pay-offs that so many RUC officers got which were the equivalent to lottery wins. I am also appalled by, but have actually heard it said in mixed company, the assertion that sub standard Catholics are getting places in the police at the expense of superior Protestants. That is logically bizarre as both religions go through the same recruitment process with minimum standards. The only difference was that proportionally more Catholics than Protestants making the grade were appointed. That its asserted that the clear up rates have dropped is not a result of the recruitment process but because of the amount of experienced officers taken redundancy. I rest my case.

Comment on Do local student sabbatical election winners go on to pursue political life post college?

I voted for Kate Fearon in QUBSU elections and as she was a friend of a friend I helped with the campaign. That means I was there same time as Turgon and John Ó Néill. I certainly remember Peter Weir being about. Another political person but not a politician who was in my year was Darwin Templeton editor of the Newsletter.

As a non-Belfast person who has spent more than half my life working in Belfast I think he should have as good a send off as he can get.
I met him quite a few times and had words with him on occasions. He was a curmudgeon , often cantankerous and angry most of the time.
Fabulous snooker player and truely gifted and in my opinion had many of the typical characteristics of some but not all Belfast people. I won’t spell them out.
He was very proud and resigned at the end and finished where he began and that was his choice after all the highs and lows.
One of the things I love about Belfast is that a legend like Alex could walk about freely doing his own thing and not one would have interfered apart from a wee yarn over the horses in Lavery’s…..

Mr Carr
I have been somewhat worried of late at the dryness of your comments. The humour and wit had abated.
The vision of An Taoiseach as a Toby jug provided a little mirth in chez fox.
Cheers.

Given that dialect usually refers to the vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation characteristics of a regional or social variety of a particular language I would ask which language you are suggesting Irish is a dialect of?

Perhaps an explanation as to where the PUP political analysis goes post David Ervine. My gut feeling on hearing Naomi Long’s result in East Belfast was that she had been partly elected on that mandate and the old labour sorts that persist in that constituency.
