Comment on #Aras11: “McGuinness may prove a very compliant ninth President of the Irish Republic”
on 21 September 2011 at 9:58 am
Does nobody else remember the resignation of Cearbhall O’Dalaigh in 1976 when the Defence Minister, Paddy Donegan called him a “thundering disgrace” for referring the proposed anti-terrorist legislation to the Supreme Court?
I was a student in Dublin then and there were a few very tense weeks.

Comment on Norris goes from hero to zero
on 31 July 2011 at 5:28 pm
David Norris taught me many years ago. Based on that experience I would have always had doubts as to whether he would make a good president. He was very entertaining and informative about what he enjoyed (Joyce) and just ignored everything and everybody else. I don’t think he would apply himself to the tedious minutiae of everyday presidential life.

Comment on Friday Thread: Hey (Father) Joe, where you going? St Pats Knock, 1976.
on 8 July 2011 at 4:33 pm
Thanks, Mick.
As a member of another (all girls) Class of 1976 I really enjoyed that. Brought back memories and made me feel very old all at the same time. Where did the last 35 years go?

Comment on McIlroy’s victory: “There’s a time and place for flags and national celebration of identity.”
on 24 June 2011 at 12:41 pm
You know, I’m not really one for golf but I’ve vaguely followed McIlroy over the years and honestly never knew or even thought about what religion he was.

Comment on Jeffrey Dudgeon’s Seanad Election Diary: First Ten days
on 14 March 2011 at 5:00 pm
Husband and I both got stuff from Maeve Cox, Dermot Frost and Ivana Bacik this morning.
Shane Ross never got my vote. His links to Conor Cruise O’Brien were enough to put me off.
As an ex-student of David Norris I used to vote for him. But not this time).
I’d be quite happy to vote for the abolition of the graduate vote.

Comment on Do local student sabbatical election winners go on to pursue political life post college?
on 3 March 2011 at 10:50 pm
Eamon Gilmore was president of USI when I was at Trinity in the seventies. He was SU President at UCG before that. Mary Harney was a TCD sabbatical officer the year before I went.
The only SU president I can really remember at Trinity was the fabulous Ian Wilson who went on to be Dave Fanning’s producer on RTE 2FM. No idea what he’s doing now.

Comment on Aerial footage of White Belfast

Good luck with getting home, ForkHandles.
I’m waiting on three getting back. Two of them should have been here by now but no luck. Just waiting for one of them to land at Heathrow from Hong Kong. She left Japan in the early hours of Saturday morning. They other two are trying to make it back from England. If they all manage to get home it will be “the best Christmas Ever!”
If I never see snow again…

Comment on Irish Labour Party: “We may not be in a position to build the road from Dublin…”
on 11 December 2010 at 10:20 pm
Back in the seventies I was a student in Dublin going to and from the North-West. The best part of the road was south to Ballygawley.
In the past year I’ve made a number of trips to Dublin. The journey is dreadful until you get to Ballygawley.
If we can’t have a decent road to Belfast, can we not have one to Dublin?

Comment on Have our parents and leaders screwed up the country?
on 31 March 2010 at 11:51 pm
I’ve got three daughters, all have had their third level education in England. Two are now working in London, one of them (Politics was part of her degree) in the political field and she’ll be working for one of the British parties during the election. The youngest is in her final year of a Politics degree and has been (weather permitting) canvassing for a political party here during the Easter vacation. She’s also just finished a History dissertation with an Irish politics theme.
I’m not sure if they’ll ever come home but I’m glad they’ve spent some time away. I was at TCD in the late seventies and came back home in the bad old days. I sometimes wonder why.
They and many of their friends would be interested in your proposal. They all read Slugger.
