A poem for the day – Launching the Whaler Juan Peron
A Belfast epic, and one of my oldest poems, the opener of my first collection, Grub. The gist of the story was found in Moss & Hume’s Shipbuilders to the World: 125 Years of Harland and Wolff, Belfast, 1861-1986, which tells how Eva Peron was due to launch a huge whaling vessel in Belfast, built [...] read our review » -
Do Words Matter?: Book Review of Political Discourse and Conflict Resolution – Debating Peace in Northern Ireland
I share many of the concerns of Andy Pollak, whose recent post ‘My Response to the Slugger Begrudgers’ zeroed in on the ‘relentless flow of negativity’ of some Slugger commentators. Pollak’s post was largely concerned with the medium of the blog. Indeed, I think the anonymity of the online world encourages extreme discourse and allows [...] read our review »

“You can see Newton’s mind at work…”
To add to the open access treasure trove at the Royal Society, Cambridge University Library is putting online some of its collection of books, maps, manuscripts and journals. We have called the first phase of our work on the Cambridge Digital Library the Foundations Project, which runs from mid-2010 to mid-2013 and has been made possible [...] read our review »

Comment on “Main obstacle to Unionist unity is Peter Robinson…”

Some contributors to Slugger get exercised when I refer to a ‘source’ or ‘sources’.
Perhaps in some cases these authors (and I don’t wish to patronise anyone) are unfamiliar with the job of dealing with ‘primary sources.’
Were I to name my sources every time I glean an insight, frankly, I would quickly find myself losing a lot of vital information. Sources would literally dry up.
All I ask is for contributors to accept the bona fides of what I write.

HIs was a far from commonplace mind. Worth remembering for what he said on the topic of whataboutery (http://www.sluggerotoole.com/archives/2005/02/glossary_what_i.php)…
The scholarly priest is a rare breed at the best of times, and rarer than ever in these days of the raconteur, the charlatan and shallow celebrity…

Only one serious conflict of interest would be if your blog was nominated. I don’t think nominating itself should be a bar to participation.

barelegs,
Well spotted.
I suspect the mechanics of these lists are pretty tough for a group to hammer out since without a single governing factor, you are left with all these strangely bended relationships to account for. I’m not so sure why Joan Bruton came so far down the list after Eamon Gilmore either.

Comment on ‘Do you do it all at once or do you do in bite size chunks given the leverage we have?’

Drift,
Go and read Richard Needham’s book if you doubt what FD has to say. One of the things we’re thinking about adding is a little flag that allows other readers to flag a post as requiring ‘more evidence’. Fighting each other through assertion is tedious for the rest of us.

That seems to me to be an invitation for someone to grasp the issue by the scruff of the neck…
