People get hung up about Nationality. I consider myself both Irish and British by birth, the two are not mutually exclusive, for me nationality stops at birth, an accident, an event I had no control over. Nothing really to celebrate about. Who was it said “Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious”.
Take a look at this rousing piece of oratory from Gordon Brown during the election campaign, at a UK Citizens conference.
Unfortunately the media chose to concentrate on his misdemeanour of calling a narrow minded old woman, a “bigot”.
This speech was never even partially reported on by Sky News. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BA2Jz7xIXw&feature=player_embedded
“Adam Boulton, the normally balanced political editor of Sky News”
Oh please, come on. Boulton may have seem balanced recently because he and his fellow Tory lickspittles at Sky where sure they where getting a majority a few weeks ago.
Boulton showed a mental imbalance in that spat with Campbell. It´s about time the regulator had a good go at Sky news coverage, it´s worse than Fox News.
I wonder if without the Tory name attached to the UUP, would they have performed better.
Gerry Adams hit the nail on the head when he said “there is no reason anyone in (NI) need to vote Tory”. I would suspect that Ringland or Sir Reg would´ve been elected in East Belfast without the Tory baggage. A massive own goal by Reg Empey.
I also don´t see how the DUP can justify lending support to a minority Tory govt. after the NI electorate have overwhelmingly rejected the Tories.
A street wise bihatch hoe has just assured me that the spelling of fellacio as opposed to fellatio is wicked and urban speak for da blo jab.
BTW I wasn´t aware that Latin was exclusively Catholic. I remember we did it for three tedious years at state grammar school. I obviously didn´t listen in class.
I’ve been catching up on some reading, recently. Most pleasantly surprised by John Drennan’s latest opus from Gill and Macmillan, Cute Hoors and Pious Protestors… It’s early days yet, but I was struck by this paragraph, part of a dissection of Fianna Fail near the beginning: One of the more fatal consequences of our colonial [...] read our review »
Are you confused about ‘dissident’ Irish Republicanism? Anxious about its existence and its seemingly increasingly deadly capabilities? Martyn Frampton’s new book, Legion of the Rearguard: Dissident Irish Republicanism (Irish Academic Press, 2011) serves both as a primer on active dissident groups and a timely analysis of their historic significance and contemporary capabilities. This book clears [...] read our review »
It’s not published until 3rd March, but one book I recommend you place an advance order for from Slugger’s Bookstore is James Harkin’s Niche. Belfast émigré Harkin examines a number of stories from business, culture and politics and comes to a single insight: everywhere the broad middle is collapsing. He offers Woolworths as an iconic exemplar [...] read our review »

Mark you really are funny. Pete is more informative and thought provoking in one sentence than you in an entire blog.
Surely the fact that we have one of the oldest and famous Observatory´s in the world, gives Pete´s blogs an extra local dimension.
