The figure you quote about expenses is for the 5 SF MPs combined not just one. Of course, if you believe the Robinson’s, by dining out at the Dorchester every night despite only being in London for six weeks every year display a better use of expenses, feel free to do so.
Of course it’s not an anti abstentionist move, but I’m amused by those, with a seemingly straight face, claiming it is. The compartmentalised mindset of the UUP never fails to amaze. Alliance with the SDLP at Stormont to oppose the DUP, allied with the DUP at Westminster to oppose the SDLP.
The biggest joke in this is the attempts by Unionists to frame this as a response to SF’s abstentionism. Presumably there’s an equally good but slightly different reason why South Belfast needs an agreed Unionist candidate. Of course, this will make Gildernew’s victory all the sweeter.
Last time you used Monty Python (“Help, help, I’m being repressed”) to have a pop at Mark (and cover up your own abundant lack of humour), I suggested you could have used this skit (half in jest) to prop up one of your repetitive sledges at SF. And 11 days later, here we are.
NB the ‘Judean People’s Front’ sketch is still out there. You could possibly wangle it in there next time Gerry mentions ‘micro-groups’.
The whole process of selecting candidates has not been handled very well and allowing a member of Provisional Sinn Fein to get elected in FST will not be popular.
John Laird (Lord Laird of Artigarvan) is unionism’s jester. His memoir A Struggle To Be Heard ” by a True Ulster Liberal” (from Slugger’s shop on Amazon here) might serve more as a heavy stocking filler than anybody’s idea of a main present. In it he wears the masks of comedy and tragedy to turn the [...] read our review »
Just your average family gathering at Christmas, with a bit of an argument about the seating cleaning arrangements… Scuffles have broken out between rival groups of Greek Orthodox and Armenian clerics over a turf war in Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity. Bemused tourists looked on as about 100 priests fought with brooms while cleaning the [...] read our review »
World by Storm has a nice piece up on the IRA’s role in helping MK, the armed wing of the ANC, in the 1980s. In particular he sees a strange alchemy at work there: …if one can think of a clearly legitimate contemporary struggle it was that against apartheid and it is to the credit [...] read our review »

hat-tip to squinter by making a point with humour, without having to link to a 40 year-old Monty Python sketch on YouTube.

Are you blaming Slugger for the news FJH?
Mick
Most news outlets cover other stories too. However, if you think the site’s coverage of all-things SF is fair, balanced and proportional…

Your first post amply demonstrates that you just don’t do irony, do you…

Secondly he was not turned down for his views on homosexually – no matter how much it suits him to spin it that way
It must have been for his views on travellers, then ie ‘the scum of the earth’?
Hold on, who am I kidding?
