Comment on Battle for the Robinson succession in Strangford…
on 3 January 2010 at 9:51 pm
I notice that the word “alleged” has been removed from Eamonn’s intro, where it had preceded “health grounds”. Glad to see it is gone, after two of us queried its initial appearance.

Nor do I, Eamonn. Could you explain the word “alleged” in this context please?

Comment on Cardinal Cahal Daly dies…
on 1 January 2010 at 3:47 am
Eamonn, An excellent opening to the end of a long life. I spoke to Cahal Daly many times, and as a political corr (then) with the Belfast Telegraph, reported many of his conciliatory speeches.
You will probably recollect a press conference at Stormont where he (and, indeed, me) were lambasted by Ian Paisley. It was over the Primrose Hill speech, which I had described as “panoramic” in its analysis of Northern Ireland and its conciliation attempts. I only met him once, at the Linen Hall Library. And how gentle and thoughtful he was.
As an atheist, I leave religious aspects to others.

I think he’s actually from a house off the Beersbridge Road. My thoughts are actually similar to when the BBC’s John Simpson again became a dad at 65. And made a news story of it. Are they trying to prove something masculine? What happens when they die? I am aged 62. Sons are 27 and 24.

Comment on Iris Robinson to stand down
on 29 December 2009 at 9:44 pm
As a sufferer from depression, it saddens me to see the predictable cheap, snide snipes appear almost instantly about Iris Robinson.
Let’s remove the stigma people attach to depression and other mental health illnesses. Regardless of our opinions on the sufferer.
Last June I had to quit the Belfast Telegraph, where I was an ex-political correspondent, also due to “severe depression”. I continue to battle it. And it is not easy.
Better to see more contributions on the illness involved. It is severe and can happen to anyone.
It must be more difficult for a politician to put her name on the illness and go public. While the snipers hide behind pseudonyms.
