Ulick sounds like the only one who’s been to a university I recognise : )

If the undergraduate population of Queen’s is so dominated by Catholics, how the hell does the Christian Union still manage to maintain its stranglehold on student politics? I couldn’t find anyone to vote for in the last Student Union elections who wasn’t involved with or backed by someone from the CU.

Ha! ‘Narrow, biased and uncritical of the bigger picture’? Yeah right. I can’t imagine who could possibly think this reflects badly on it’s writer, or that media coverage of child rape and its concealment reflects badly on the media. Good luck winning back congregations with that old guff!

It’s all very well for the ‘victim here’ to say it’s all OK because he feels safe now, but he’s not the only one who needs to be protected from these people. Things might have changed in the last six years, but as they were supposed to have changed some time before that, how is anyone to know?

I don’t think it’s at all obvious that most of Slugger’s readership would be ‘endorsers’ – most of its writers, possibly.

Think a disgruntled nationalist has it hard? Try choosing who to vote for on feminist grounds!

  6. Comment on “have you seen The Wire?”
    on 7 April 2010 at 2:55 am

The Andersonstown News recently published a series of vox pops on mephedrone in which one man’s argument for banning it was that it must be dangerous because ‘it’s a heroin substitute’. No mention anywhere in the paper that the guy was thinking of the wrong drug. Quality journalism!

  7. Comment on Britblog Round Up 257 and British anti innovation biases..

The Paul Sagar piece is refreshing. Endlessly shaming mothers who do the work of bringing up children at an early age for being irresponsible is like when teachers respond to bad attendance by shouting at the few kids who have bothered to turn up. The attitudes of teenage boys are the real threat to society, and our sex education is doing absolutely nothing to change them.

  9. Comment on Bill Drummond remembers Belfast…

Nice programme, if a bit odd to hear about Belfast (even 70s Belfast!) as a metropolitan wonderland, seen through the eyes of a very excited child. Bet the tourist board’s delighted.

So not only were women and girls left vulnerable to untouchable scumbags within republican communities, but those married to republicans were truly in it ’til death do us part’, like it or not. So much for protecting Mother Ireland, boys.
