Comment on Ulster Unionist/Tory alliance in danger of collapsing?
on 11 March 2010 at 7:50 pm
UU just survives the threat of nearly having some Catholic candidates. What a close shave! Now back to the good old them and us which they are clearly more conmfortable with.

Comment on “While we are a city of culture there has to be a recognition that we’re not part of the UK.”

The City of Culture bid is no threat to anyone’s sense of nationality unless their nationality is insecure.
This is a great opportunity for Derry to look beyond a narrow sectarian position and recognise that both/ and can work for everyone!

Comment on A tribute to the amazing Armagh Rhymers
on 30 January 2010 at 2:27 am
Andy is so right, the Rhymers are Gems. I remember years ago sitting with them as they watched the Druid Theatre play: on the Black Pig’s Dyke. The play used mummers, masked men, as a metaphor for the other masked men that have threatened our society over the years. Seamus Tansey the flute player was a member then. seamus grew steadily apoplectic as the play and had to be calmed and restrained from this ‘attack on the integrity of the great mumming tradition’. I hope the mummers will not be a casualty of the £1m arts council cuts announced this week. They should be celebrated by all.

Comment on Will ‘private’ talks with DUP scupper Conservative-UUP pact?
on 29 January 2010 at 9:17 pm
Nevin,
Just been reading your successor as supreme blogger ‘Alan in Belfast’ when he talks in yesterday’s post about the TUV and communication. What message is the TUV sending out with the fact that they are holding an event in East Belfast in an Orange hall – not a taig is welcome in this house. Sadly sectarianism is alive and well in those quarters.

Comment on Will ‘private’ talks with DUP scupper Conservative-UUP pact?

“I’d reckon in a normal society they would attract almost all the unionist leaning votes.”
Not sure about that Prionsa Eoghann. The conservatives have no attraction for Lady Silvia, and what about all left leaning unionists? But at least it is good that now we are having a debate about sectarion unionists and non sectarian unionists.

Comment on On the importance of the law in online political discourse…
on 21 January 2010 at 10:46 pm
Tangential point, but still worth making. Our political discourse would be better served with a broader understanding of the concept of what is in the common good.
Have a look at http://www.justiceharvard.org.
All our politicians should be forced to watch and consider.
