Profile for Bangordub

Bangordub has lived in Bangor for six years The purpose of this particular blog is to give a nationalist, although not party political, perspective on politics and whatever else comes to mind with particular reference to the 6 Northeastern Counties of Ireland (or whatever your preference for calling them is). The twist is that I am not from these counties, rather a few miles south of the border. My intention is to amuse, stimulate and hopefully learn a few things along the way. I would ask that comments, if any, are not personally abusive. Robust is absolutely fine! Bangordub, May 2012

John Barry: “We need legislators, not negotiators…”

Wed 9 April 2014, 7:24am

Tweet I had an interesting chat today with John Barry. A fellow Dubliner but a far more interesting and indeed public character than that may suggest. John is a Green Party candidate in the forthcoming Council elections standing in the Abbey ward of the new North Down and Ards Council. He was co-opted onto the existing […] more »

Tweet In light of recent developments regarding ex RUC officers being re-employed or not, as the case may be, this particular advertisment raises some interesting scenarios. Major Crime Investigators? more »

Fahas penultimate blog is now up on my site covering North Down and Ards. Interestingly he predicts a gain for the Green Party but still no joy for the SDLP.

May I clarify that I am not, nor ever have been, a member of any political party, nor am I advancing the agenda of any. I think you are suggesting that by publishing an interview with a council candidate I have an ulterior motive. Simply put, I do not. As a matter of fact I cleared the above article with John prior to publication for reasons of accuracy. My own opinions as expressed above are, of course, fair game and yes I am a republican, although, perhaps, not in a sense that you may recognise.
Thanks to those above who have contributed constructively.

    Great stuff Nicholas,
I’ll have Faha’s analysis for Lisburn and Castlereagh up tomorrow. He is completing one a week in the lead up to the May elections and saving Belfast until last ;-)
One of the recurring themes of his articles is the repidly falling nationalist turnout and whether this trend will continue.

  5. Comment on So what’s a LetsGetAlongerist, and what’s not?
    on 1 April 2014 at 4:35 pm

I really have to comment here (knowing FJH as I do).
Letsgetalongerists as I understand them, are those who deny or seek to change the essentially tribal nature of political discourse in this part of the world.
Seeking to change that is a noble objective. Denying it exists is a bit mad.
Mr FJH regards, I think, Alliance, as the worst offenders. He may be correct. I think he puts them in the denier camp. I’d love to be present at a political meeting with Granni Trixie for example although I have witnessed himself and Comrade Stalin of this parish having en excellent “exchange of views”. Ahem
The point I am trying to make is that the first thing on the agenda is usually, ” what side of the fence are ye on?”
It was my first impression on moving to the North East and it still is.

This is all great fun Lads and Ladies,
Is the nub of the issue at stake not that we should all declare an interest or otherwise which may, or may not, colour our motives and motivations, particularly as a blogger promoting a “piece” as it is quaintly referred to?
There is certainly a perceived imbalance to the post above which is deserving of a response.
As an aside I’m curious as to the lack of response regarding Fianna Fail’s policy following their Ard Fheis of fielding candidates north of the border by 1919
