  1. Comment on The DUP and a hung Parliament

Dundonald voter [4] In the Duplicity party, ethics is a county in England. If there’s any justice they’ll all get thrown out. alas, we’re probably stuck with Londongregory up here in east Derry.

Dundonald voter. Funny how, for Ian Og, ‘the best interests of NI are conveniently the same as those for the DUP. By the way, is £5.00 the going rate for ‘slivers of land round your neck of woods?

  3. Comment on PEBs: The SDLP a mixed bag…

I believe Sunny Jim was reported to have suggested a mere 35 years too late, that Unionists should have supported power sharing in 1974 with Gerry Fitt and John Hume [with the benefit of hindsight], instead of trying to bring the north to a standstill. Talk about slow learners.

Fretjumper [15] It was no accident that Hume’s agenda was to lumber his party with Durkan for the same motives as Thatcher favoured Major in the tory case. Vanity, pure and simple.
Thatcher ensured there would be no Tory figure who would be remembered from the end of the 20th century after her, and Hume did as much with the SDLP. Hume effectively made sure his party would not go against his protege, and the leadership election was a deputy election only as a result.
It’s curious that the two parties from opposite sides of the divide, which were set up within a year of each other, [SDLP; 1970, and DUP; 1971], had no leadership elections for the remainder of the century, yet both would balk at the suggestion they weren’t democratic..

  5. Comment on Sinn Fein offer for Nationalist Pact spurned
    on 14 April 2010 at 12:08 am

FJH I wonder why the parties publicly call for these pacts and incur the allegation of sectarianism, when they could probably advise their voters privately on the doorstep. The voters will spontaneously and tactically vote for the bigger party in a given constituency. I think many of the SDLP voters in FST will lend SF their votes this time [and ditto for the SB votersin the other direction. we’ll soon find out though…

Lionel Hutz. I suppose we should be grateful that Fearghal and Mike Nesbitt didn’t join the TUV. That would be confusing, TUV live?

apollo [4] I looked in briefly and thought, where are the jumpsuits and codpieces. Are the SDLP trying to remake ‘a clockwork orange’?

  8. Comment on How Nationalist turn out is turning Northern Ireland greener…
    on 11 April 2010 at 5:09 pm

PaddyReilly, [16] So, it’s Hobson’s Choice for the SDLP? They get to choose between survival and in the process be accused of sectarian stitchup, or being sunk.

Kevin Barry [13] There an hilarious post over on DCR[I'm sure you're aware of that yuku board, where it's chief blogger, came out withthis gem in advising Nationalists to vote SF and [through their abstentionist stance] LOSE INFLUENCE in Westminster. And this after the NIO and Whitehall helped them get P&J over the line, and browbeating ROBBO and his abominable snowmen into abject surrender. No wonder Robbo is in a constant rage.

  10. Comment on Nightmare scenario unfolding for Margaret and Fearghal
    on 11 April 2010 at 3:36 pm

MU [23] Even if Connor wins this FST seat from Gildernew, this time, It can still be got back by SF next time, since the same unionist arrangement is not likely to apply beyond this election. I suspect McKinney is already regretting standing as are the SDLP, but they can’t be seen to withdraw now and make things look worse for them. Not a good start for Ritchie, at all. McDonnell should have been elected leader, although, I’m not sure either would have changed SDLP fortunes much.
