Profile for Academic Anonymous
I'm an academic from Northern Ireland, running an anonymous blog on issues in local and international politics, media and journalism, the footie, higher education and academic life. Why anonymous? It allows me to speak freely and fearlessly, qualities not always appreciated when you work under a regime of corporate managerialism. But Slugger knows who I am and wouldn't want me around if I was dodgy. Right Slugger?

I think Paul’s idea run’s a bit too close to the rules and constraints of the academic journal than to the freedom of opinion and cut and thrust of debate enjoyed by the blogging community. It’s not always right, it’s not always pretty, it can piss us off sometimes but if we didn’t get anything out of it we wouldn’t do it. And as Seymour Major put it very succinctly on this thread, there are actually moderating influences out there. Your blog post can be read, considered and generate debate; it can be read, considered but not commented upon; or it can be read and forgotten like a bad dose of the flu. I’m happy with that and I’m not going to lose sleep over it.
But you know what? It’s a lot more fun than FaceBook. Telling all your unknown “friends” that you’re scratching your arse at 4.24pm, that your cat’s just back from Iraq and has given birth to a half baby/half kitten, or that you’re lost in Lidl, wondering what to have for dinner? What’s that all about?

Hello Comrades/Friends
Yes, I’m Greg, Stephen’s co-author. I intended my blog to be anonymous etc but folks are catching on so what the hell! I’ve come out!!
Anyway, Stephen has put our case well enough without me adding to it. The only thing I will say is that we’re really very relaxed about criticism because it keeps us on the ball and avoids complacency – the killer for any writer. We’re also keen to take our ideas out of the ivory tower and into the real world no matter what reaction we get. It’s just the way we’re wired and if you can’t take a bit of stick then you really shouldn’t put yourself out there in the first place.
So thanks to all for at least taking an interest, regardless what you think of the book. And thanks to Slugger for putting it out there.
Now there’s a post elsewhere on the site I really must respond to! You know the one…about controlling what bloggers write. Outrageous!
