UUP man breaks ranks to lay into Ritchie over handling of loyalist funds…
AFTER the recent Margaret Ritchie-UUP love-in, David McNarry’s vicious attack on the Social Development Minister over her handling of the withdrawal of funds from UDA-linked projects seems curiously out of step with the rest of his party, especially as his party leader is backing her version of events in the row over the loyalist scheme.
Belfast Gonzo @ 12:39 PM
completely off topic - but was surprised one of the big stories this week is not covered here anywhere.
thats the seagate closure in limavady by the way…
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 01:20 PMit’s no surprise that David ‘We [The Orange Order] bring this ‘province’ to a standstill” McNarry is rushing to the defence of the UDA. This is after all the same David McNarry who’s sickened to his stomach to hear Irish being spoken in Stormont.
Sectarianism as sectarianism does....
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 01:32 PMYeah what-ever happened to that Ritchie-Robinson thing?
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 01:34 PMLike OILibhear Im not at all surprised at David Mc Narry’s remarks.
His helpful input into the Garvaghy rd and Ormeau Rd stand offs was to threaten every body that the Orange Order would hold a parade through Belfast before marching up the Falls Rd to a rallying point in Andytown. Very wise indeed.
That was around the time he chanted the mantra about bringing the province to a stand still.
which almost happened with motorways, roads to Aldergrove and the Port fo larne being blocked. The end result of this was still no parade down Garvaghy or the Ormeau Roads but the almost total collapse of Larne Harbour millions of pounds lost as investors seen this state as a political backward entity stuck in a bigoted timewarp.
Any way David I enjoyed your input. Who’s next is there any with any thing sensible to say.
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 02:07 PMMcNarry is an interesting creature. His hardline views would have him in a natural home of the DUP but it is obvious his disdain snobbery keeps him in the traditional party of government. Same goes for Burnside.
He was obviously spooked by the coviviality of events at the weekend.
Does this guy have the political antennae of a retarded walrus?
I know he is of the opinion that closer co-operation with SDLP is not in the UUP’s interest but did he not see the heat the Dupper/Shinner axis took over their attempts to attack MR for standing up to para - sites/militaries?
Maybe he did and thought ‘i’ll have some of that’.
So be it!
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 02:20 PMMaybe my spelling resembles that of a retarded walrus! :-)
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 02:22 PMA few days ago Sir Reg was telling his conference delgates---in reference to the damage that internal disunity and do-it-yourself press releases had done to the party--- that “those days are over.”
He has to sort out the McNarry problem; preferably sacking him as chief whip and throwing him to the wolves. Nobody in the UUP gives a damn about McNarry and Empey has nothing to lose, and much to gain, by sorting him out.

Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 02:23 PMMcNarry a renowned nasty piece of work - comments entirely unsurprising in the circumstances.
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 02:42 PMThis latest from McNarry is unsurprising. It might be criticism for Ritchie’s decision being legally challengable or such like but the perception will undoubtably be that he is complaining about stopping money to the UDA. McNarry should have known that this would happen and I have a suspicion that he does know this but does not care.
This episode seems to be more about McNarry being annoyed by what transpired at the UUP conference; that he seems to be loosing the argument within the UUP about which direction to take next and that his leadership chances are continually receeding.
I do wonder if McNarry would jump ship if Osama bin Allister and the prodiban do set up a party. He would, however, be very unlikely to get to be leader but I guess he could be deputy leader and assembly spokesperson. Although I have said before that a big name defection to the prodiban would be very welcome I do have some anxieties about the possibility that McNarry could be such a big defection.
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 02:46 PMTurgon,
Whats the story about the new unionist party / grouping? any updates?
McNarry, hmmm, an angry man methinks.

“His hardline views would have him in a natural home of the DUP”
No, he fits perfectly into the UUP.
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 03:12 PMDoes this guy have the political antennae of a retarded walrus?
The animal rights people will be on to you for insulting walruses.
McNarry is possibly the most unpleasant man in Northern Ireland politics, but sadly he represents a strand of UUP opinion, along with Burnside and wannabe non-MLA Michael Copeland which is basically too stuck up to join the DUP.
McNarry’s defence of UDA money fits comfortably in with Burnside’s past discussions about becoming UDA Press Officer and Michael Copeland’s wannabe 1916 Somme Colonel attitude down the Newtownards Road.
I know most ‘decent people’ in the UUP can’t stand him, but he did get elected on their ticket so he’s their responsibility, like it or not.
I do wonder if McNarry would jump ship if Osama bin Allister and the prodiban do set up a party
Turgon, what does ‘prodiban’ mean. I mean, I know who they are, but where does the word come from. A google search produces only Slugger and a few documents in Hungarian!
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 03:31 PMhe is nothing short of bigoted loyalist who is an embarrassment to the human race!!
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 03:58 PMSammy, it’s the Taliban from .. Tullyban.
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 04:00 PMIf David McNarry ever decides to take a break from all the hustle and bustle of what is the political reality of the Assembly.
He may in his free time consider joining the Pride of the Raven flute band and becoming hte band spokesman.
Most of the band spokesmen talk non sense and are wary of people knowing who they are.
At least he not concerned about people knowing who he is quiet happy talking non sense in relation to parades. I remeber him wanted the Orange Order to have a protest parade up the Falls Rd to a rallying point at Andytown. He’d fit in well there.

what makes you think McNasty could fit into the DUP we have seen since devolution? The natural home for his attitude and politics is firmly within the UUP. One more well managed election from the DUP (ie well controlled candidate selection) will complete the process from old to new DUP and leave McNasty and his ilk stranded within the wannabe party of unionism.
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 04:20 PMEmpey should learn from Trimbles mistakes,if there is a cancer -cut it out-dont let it grow.He should eject him and allow him to join the bnp or some other group of supremacists.
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 04:34 PMMcNarry comes across as a supremely unimpressive figure.
His ill-tempered walkout from a live Radio Ulster programme a couple of years back typified him.
Reg: learn from Trimble.
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 05:46 PM“learn from Trimble"- a phrase I thought I’d never, ever hear!

suggesting that he learns not to repeat the mistakes that trimble made in allowing dissenters to effectively create party dis-unity.Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 05:57 PMSo the Lion of Strangford strikes again. What a guy. Of course, there are a number of explanations for his behaviour:
1. he is a sectarian bigot
2. he likes to think that loyalist thugs are his friends
3. he wants to mobilise the vast numbers of UUC delegates who voted for him during the leadership election.
Margaret Ritchie received a standing ovation on Saturday. This complete prick has decided that he knows better and issued his Press Release without any authorisation. Just to make it even more interesting, he released it the same day that UUP MLAs received a letter from the aforementioned Lion of Strangford instructing them not to speak to the media about opposition.
Daithi McNarry, Lion of Strangford - captain of the Stormont Star Trek Appreciation Society, poster-boy for the Irish Language Act lobby, devotee of Iris Robinson’s speeches on fisheries and now business counsultant for the UDA.
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 06:05 PMMcNarry’s views are the total opposite of the 90%+ of the UUP members who rightfully gave Margaret Ritchie a standing ovation last Saturday.
What kind of party allows its own “Chief Whip” (ROTFL!) to attack the views of the Party grassroots like this??
If Reg has any credibility left he has got to show some balls and come down hard on McNarry here.
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 06:40 PMSammy, it’s the Taliban from .. Tullyban
Duh! Me stupid boy.
1. he is a sectarian bigot
2. he likes to think that loyalist thugs are his friends
3. he wants to mobilise the vast numbers of UUC delegates who voted for him during the leadership election.
The first two are correct. The third is just bitchy. But funny.
Posted by on Oct 31, 2007 @ 06:48 PMI remember McNarry as the champion of the Loyalist Commission, which appeared to be a mechanism to achieve nothing other than allow people like Johnny Adair to be seen in the company of unionist politicians and churchmen, and thus buff up their public image.
Interested Observer summed it up well, the man likes to think he’s cool because he hangs around with tattooed thugs. That is no doubt the motivation behind this latest outburst. Hopefully his grave misjudgement of public opinion in Northern Ireland will lead to the end of his political career.

Skinbop, I must agree, but actually, it’s SO NOT here, that I am beginning to think we separately dreamt it, and indeed it was all a baaaaaaad dream.
