UDA backing Conservatives Jim Nicholson?

Carried as their lead story, the Sunday World the report that UDA Boss, John Bunting, has been helping out in the Ulster Conservatives and Unionist Euro election campaign.

The North Belfast Brigadier was reported to have been seen putting up posters of Jim Nicholson. Nicholson refused to comment directly, referring the papers editor Jim McDowell to the UUP Press office where a spokesperson said that it cannot be “interpreted as the UDA backing the UUP or the UUP backing the UDA.”

North Belfast MLA and SDLP European hopeful, Alban Maginness, said that he was “horrified” adding that he was “utterly shocked that a constitutional party like the Ulster Unionist Party would use or allow itself to be construed to be used by a paramilitary organisation.”

  1. Andrew hates the Ulster Unionists. We get it already

  2. Is that an official comment?

Your response to the Sunday World report: “Andrew hates the UUP!” Exclusive?

I just hate stupidity, hypocrisy and terrorists putting up posters on behalf of a party that opposed terrorism for so many years.

What happened to ‘Decent people, vote Ulster Unionist’? ... or I get it terrorists are included in the slogan ‘For all of us’?

  3. Paisley was once in jail and when in jail you cant vote at least these thugs can, not like thugs have ever voted for DUP before….....

  4. DC

Hmmmm yes so your comparing Paisley with terrorists? I’d be careful with that if I were you.

I hardly think what Paisley was accused of (protesting) is comparable with a commander of the UDA. An organisation which has overseen hundreds of murders, acts of violence and brutality; not to mention the petty theft and extortion which is crippling already struggling small local businesses in this time of recession.

I think your excusing this act of immorality.

  5. Careful, proof is Paisley was in jail, he couldn’t vote, the UDA was proscribed not that long ago really, Paisley couldnt vote when in jail, the UDA members could at a time Paisley Snr was in the clanger.

End of. so your point is?

  6. No Andrew, im comparing Paisley to forfeiting the vote at a time when those in the UDA who weren’t proscribed till 92 held more sway than Paisley, who gave up his vote, using his own judgement, when put in jail.

    Okay?

  7. I honestly think there must be someone high up in the UUP sabotaging this campaign!  They’re doing a great job of it, I must say.

  9. This isn’t at all new, I’m afraid. I remember individuals linked to the UVF were seen putting up posters for Cecil Walker back when he lost. In the same election, Billy Hutchinson stood down, ostensibly to try to help him.

  10. Don’t wish to be rude, but there are UVF boys round my way who canvass and act as polling agents for DUP. And at least one is a member. Also worth pointing out that at least 1 ex-DUP councillor was strongly linked to UVF-and he only left in 2007. Kettle and pot spring to mind. DUP don’t really have cleaner hands than anyone else.
Don’t see Andrew complaing about the terrorists in the Executive either.

  11. Well, that’s Jim Nicholson given the kiss of death. Let’s hope there was no exchange of bodily fluids :^(

BTW Andrew shouldn’t “Brigadier” be in inverted commas?

  12. I wonder what Posh Boy David Cameron makes of this? That’s the really interesting question. As for Loki. Name names, if not then your comments can be dismissed as petty smoke-screening.

  19. Look folks, let’s not get dragged down side-streets over this issue as some UUP posters want (incidentally where have Chekov, O’Nell and Seymour Major been over the last few days?).

The issue is very simple - a senior paramilitary has been out putting up posters for a man who is advertised prominently on the Tory Party website as their candidate for Northern Ireland. Indeed a man who has recieved the personal blessing of Posh Boy DC. What possible justification does the UUP have for this?

It has of course happened before in North Belfast when Fred Cobain, who was wheeled out to try and spike Sylvia’s guns by expressing support for the Tory take-over, had the same people putting up posters for him in 2007.

There would appear to be a very cosy relationship between the UUP and the paramilitaries throughout Belfast, but particularly so in the North and West of the city.

Decent people….don’t vote for the Tories!

  24. ??,

“oh dear maggie, go ask de chasterlain.”

    He’s Canadian not British.

“the thing is SINN FEIN isnt holding the weapons.”

Nor are the “British” you mentioned but whose names and ranks you can’t supply. The thing is you said SF had been disarmed. The other thing is I said nobody had been disarmed.
    “They surrendered, we won”

Nobody surrendered. And who is “we”?
