“this partial-parliament in this little semi-statelet..”
Another day, another rippling quote from a Sinn Féin TD. This time, as noted in the Irish Times - “SF back to basics..” [subs req], it’s Louth TD, Arthur Morgan, and he’s not referring to the Assembly nor to Northern Ireland. From the Dáil record.
“Why would I expect any different from a Tánaiste and a Government over this partial Parliament in this little semi-statelet over which he is presiding?”
And, as the Irish Times also noted, Fianna Fáil TD, Martin Mansergh, provided the response.
Very crude criticisms were made of the Government’s economic policy by a party which does not have any coherent economic policy that I am aware of. I was shocked, although not surprised, to hear any Deputy refer to this as a partial parliament in a semi-statelet. I have always had great difficulty understanding so called republicans who do not recognise this Republic. It throws into context the party in question’s presenting itself as the champion of sovereignty and democracy when it is clear that the Deputy opposite does not recognise the sovereignty of either this State or its people. The European Union in the past 35 years has had much more respect for sovereignty and democracy in this country than the party opposite.

I’m not sure why Morgan’s quote is the source of so much smug Irish Times tittering. Sinn Féin clearly recognises the southern state as an incomplete Irish state. This political point of view is a perfectly logical one in the context of Irish Nationalism or Irish Republicanism

If the Shinners spent alot of time and effort in analysing what went wrong in the dail elections, apart from Gerry’s H-block degree in Economics becoming exposed (he was tired the poor little lamb :-( , they could do worse than use Morgan’s remarks as an indicator.
The southern electorate only want parties in government that live in the real world, they could be wrong but they find society functions better that way?
Accept Eire as a sovereign nation, yes campaign for it to be widened to the rest of us but don’t insult the esteemed offices of state of a modern european nation when you let loose a batch of your outdated dogma.

So the brave Arthur believes a cat’s arse has a social conscience ? My local vet assures me that cats never mind their arses are entirely oblivious of any social conscience . He also assures me that SF’s policies appear to be devoid of sufficient economic considerations :(

They saw fit to put cartoons on the front page but handed over an iconic photograph of Paisley to the Belfast Telegraph which used it well with a decent headline (editorially speaking) and the ‘radical’ Andersonstown News couldn’t even write anything and instead hid behind their usual tactic of endless vox pops of people shopping in west Belfast. As squinter banged on about the BBC describing Mairead Farrell as a “bomber” (I doubt she would have had too many issues with the term, even if the Andytown News is embarrassed by it) they gave Ian Paisley an easy time. I expect we’ll get another mural soon with something ‘revolutionary’ on it soon, to keep the rank and file happy.
