“there was no evidence that he was to be outed as an informer..”

Some interesting detail from the Irish News front-page report in which “one of the leading lights in CRJ”, Jim McCarthy, who was sentenced to five years in 1976 for possession of firearms, “angrily” denies being an informer after he had, reportedly, “been visited at his west Belfast home by police who told him he was to be publicly exposed.” [subs req for now] The report quotes a Sinn Féin spokesman

A Sinn Fein spokesman said: “We can confirm Jim McCarthy contacted the party after the PSNI visited him.  “Sinn Fein was happy to let Jim know that there was no evidence that he was to be outed as an informer. “Jim provides a valuable community service in the area and we fully support him in taking the matter future in terms of his complaint to the ombudsman.”

And the report also notes that, as was the case with Roy McShane, McCarthy had previously been a driver for the Sinn Féin leadership.

The 51-year-old, who was once a driver for Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams, has also been visited at his west Belfast home by police who told him he was to be publicly exposed.

The report doesn’t record when he was a driver nor whether he shared another of McShane’s roles.

In 1989 that internal security unit was stood down over concerns that it had been infiltrated by the British intelligence agencies. In what would prove to be a crucial mistake the IRA moved many of those involved in the ‘nutting squad’ into protection and driving roles for the Sinn Fein leadership.

  3. Ahh a leading light in CRJ a long time tout and British Agent?

I’m thinking just the latest in a long list of well placed, influential (pro Adams) British agents ‘en situe’ in Republican areas.

I wonder when ‘The Revealers’ will get round to the two leading lights at the Falls Community Council and the West Belfast Festival, soon I hope as we are entitled to the truth !!

    Curiosity killed ....

  4. In response to MM’s comments on jim mccarthy. Firstly can i correct you MM on three points you made my friend. Jim was not shot for his behaviour during the blanket protest, jim was taken off the protest after a collapsed lung left him seriously ill. He was unable to stay on the protest but as his condition improved he still assisted with prisoners needs..
A personal dispute with another republican around that time and a cocktail of spiteful rumours led eventually to jim being shot.
What people forget or “choose to forget” is after this incident a thorough ivestigation was carried out within the republican movement and jim mccarthy was given a full and published apology in an phoblacht/Republican news by the IRA..This is a fact. The IRA by its own admission had mistakenly shot him.

Could i also correct you MM that, martin mc gartland the guy who you referred to being “Let go” actually jumped through a window pain on the third floor of a block of flats to escape and fell nearly 50 feet unto a public road in broad daylight..leaving himself butchered and unconsious with numerous fractures...A bit dramatic for someone who had just been “let go” dont you think!. Then again Maybe martin had a stunt double that day and he actually was “let go”
(By the way all this informayion is well known in the public domain folks)

Oh and to correct once again the location of this absurd “Let go” incident was in the twinbrook estate in west belfast and not in lenadoon as you stated..

Anyway MM i will let you get back to your conspiracy theories and fictatious writings..
Who knows maybe “MM” stands for Martin Mcgartland…
I Will leave that thought with the readers.

    REPUBLICAN.
