“There is now widespread and growing concern among republicans..”
Interestingly, the Sinn Féin representative now threatening to collapse the Northern Ireland Executive take the ball away over the issue of policing and justice powers is TD, Caoimhghin O Caolain. According to the BBC report
Totally unacceptable indeed, Caoimhghin.. but who promised you it would be May? Update Some political responses here[Caoimhghin O Caolain] said republicans were growing increasingly concerned at the lack of progress being made on the issue. “If we are forced to conclude that change will not be forthcoming from the executive then we will have no option but to pull out our ministers and seek to put pressure where responsibility ultimately lies, which is on the British government in London,” he said.
“There is now widespread and growing concern among republicans at the failure to transfer policing and justice powers from London to Belfast in due time. “When Sinn Fein changed our policy on policing in the north, accepting that a new beginning was being made, it was with the prospect that policing and justice powers would be transferred by May of this year. “It is now the end of August and we do not even have a date for transfer. This is totally unacceptable.”

Republicans threatening to pull a Trimble. Oh the irony ;-)
Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 05:01 PMSorry dont believe that the Shinners would de-rail the gravey train.
they’ve been bought and should have the decency to stay bought.Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 05:03 PMFD it isnt ironic it is unbelievable.
However I considered Big Ian “in government” with McGuinness et all to be beyond the realms of possibility.
So it might happen-they might do a walk out until their expenses & salaries were threatened.Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 05:10 PMI wonder how this news plays in the ROI?
Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 05:11 PMIf the conditions for supporting British policing in Ireland have not been met why is support for Stormont being threatened and not support for the PSNI/RUC?
Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 05:13 PM...cos it threatens the gravy train for everyone, not just SF?
Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 05:16 PMA very childish statement like a baby who does not get its sweats, Sinn Fein have to understand they are in a democracy if the others dont agree thats democracy you cant get your own way all of the time. Policing and Justice will probably eventually happen,so patients is called for. however if Sinn Fein do collapse the Assembly the Americans will not be very happy and they will loose their funding and you never know the Assembly may be able to continue with out them?
Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 05:19 PMphil you might be right or cynical.
I still believe this:
“Our ministers are not in the Executive to fill seats, to make careers or to be administrators. Their mandate is to bring about lasting and fundamental change. That is why Sinn Fein put them there.” a more fuller account of this news item.
Naivety?Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 05:20 PM....are we supposed to quake..........?
.... just what difference will this make to the lives of anyone in NI who isn’t an MLA?
Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 05:23 PMHow could it come to this?....during the Belfast/St.Andrew negotiations we were being told by the media and the Priests that IRA/Sinn Fein had came along way, are now a major political force and very astute in the world of negotiations.
Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 05:25 PM“Their mandate is to bring about lasting and fundamental change. “
.....but they can only do so it there is full agreement fron Unionists..... that’s the deal they accepted
Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 05:25 PMtrue cynic, however after decades of saying NO to power-sharing, the DUP appear to be saying NO to everything that constitutes power-sharing.
Maze .. NO
ILA .. NO
P&J;.. NOPosted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 05:33 PMPercy it will play in the ROI as a huge shrug of the shoulders.
We have an economy in recession-the UK pays for Norn iron.
SF are a fringe party here in ROI and so they shall remain.
There is a chance that Mary Who may lose her euro seat in Dublin.

Yes Percy you’re being naive.

Balderdash. When IRA/Sinn Fein comes on television stating that Paul Quinn’s murder wasn’t carried out by Republicans, does this goive anyone the confidence they are fit for devolved policing? When Gerry Adams comes on TV stating Slab Murphy (gangster and oil barron) is a good Republican, does this do anything to build confidence within the Unionist community?… and need I mention the IRA/Sinn Fein’s offer to murder the killers of McCartney?
Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 05:45 PMSo what if the Executive collapses? That’ll lead to a much greater role for the Dublin Government in the form of joint-authority.

Posted by longshot on Aug 24, 2008 @ 06:48 PMNo it wont, Gordon needs the DUP and Reg has cosied up to Cameron, things will carry on much as they are.
Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 06:00 PMLongshot-doubt it.
Just a return to Direct Rule.Brian Cowen does not have Bertie’s appetite for Punishment meetings.
Moreover he has an economy to run.
In BAs time the boomwas on autopilot.
Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 06:06 PMI thought we had direct rule at the moment. I mean, who is doing what?
Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 06:08 PMIts time to go guys. Either work this out or clear off and leave us with a huge saving. Why for example did it take 10 NI Ministers to do the work that was done by 2 in NIO? Thats 10 minsiters, 10 sets of staff, 10 cars, 10 Advisors (at least), 10 offices, 10 PAs.
The NI Govt. can devolve more to the bigger councils and let them get on with it. Parliament Buildings would make a good hotel.
Truth is NO ONE WILL NOTICE.

Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 06:13 PMIN the past it was, agree with us or we’ll blow you up, now it’s, agree with us or we walk away…
I say let them walk out, give their ministerial seats to the SDLP and move on.Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 06:20 PMT&J;Are “sweats” sweets in Ballymena?
Posted by on Aug 24, 2008 @ 06:30 PMIn my own personal experience, I don’t know anyone who would mourn the passing of this sham- farce assembly. The main parties are paralysed with fear of losing their main voter base, Most people are more concerned with fuel and food prices and housing, which the assembly can do little about. I think it will stumble on because the salaries and expenses make some people a huge pot of money, and they would be unemployable elsewhere.

SO when republicans say the DUP must “commit to powersharing and partnership”.... they really mean “if you don’t give us what we want then we bog off”.....
