  2. who was the student with the tie and short hair? I haven’t lived in Nor Iron in years. Do young people really look like that in northern ireland? were are the young, idealistic long haired rebels? (rebels in the non irish meaning of the word.)

  3. It’s a fair take.

  4. Were you at the awards Pete? [But who would have been spellchecking Sinn Fein’s press releases in that case?] Indeed. Meh.

  5. Heck- the student was Brendan Hughes who is heavily involved in the Gown newspaper in Queens one of the nominees.

Brendan is a Coalisland boy- long hair is frowned upon in rural Tyrone- you should have realised that at least no matter how long you’ve been away!

  6. Thanks barelegs I am sure he is a great guy and will probably end up as a great journalist.

I am just becoming cynical in my old age. I have met some of my children’s friends who want to “go into politics” but do not have a passion on any issues.  I like kids who want to go out and change the world -not who get involved in student union politics, spend a year or two at the NUS, become a parliamentary researcher and then a New Labour back bencher who milks expenses and is as useful as holy water in an orange lodge.

  9. The major shock for me was finding out that Jim Wells understands both comedy and politics better than Tim McGarry. He really is proper funny.

  10. Tim McGarry… the man is a legend. He is to comedy as Tommy Cooper was to magic.

  11. I’m not sure what the reference to a ‘beautiful friendship’ with UTV means Pete. Didn’t Slugger just get into bed with Channel 4?

    Maybe you can enlighten us.

  12. Gonzo

Well I wouldn’t describe it as “getting into bed with Channel 4”.

But I’d suggest this is a more collaborative effort to make UTV’s output embeddable [on Slugger for now].

    Early days.

    Let’s see what happens.

    Pete

I hope you guys were wearing condoms.

  14. Mick Hall….why do you ask about the condoms..????  Do you think they’re all a bunch of pricks?

  15. No Marty,

Not these days, especially in companies like C4, where equal opportunities is all the rage.

Although in reality if one peeps below the duvet cover, not much really changes, as all chairs are still filled by middle class people.

  16. Pete,

this is totally off-topic, but I thought I’d post it here given that you’re a science person and are firmly in the man is causing global warming camp.

Why has Slugger not posted anything regarding the Climategate scandal which is raging on the internet at the moment, but is being ignored - to a degree - in the mainstram media?

I disagree with almost everything this guy says, but he is correct on this:

To everyone else on here, I apologise for this intervention.
