Still honking for Pluto..
Cassini has been sending back close-up images of Enceladus after its fly-by [and the BBC reports are getting bloggy - Ed]. Saturn, pictured again, is still a planet, but it seems that some people still haven’t gotten over Pluto’s annus horribilis - and those plutoids didn’t help. There are those still honking for Pluto’s return to full planet status, or as the Professor puts it, “The Pluto planet controversy continues.” Alan Boyle of MSNBC reports here on the Great Planet Debate.. and his comments zone includes comments from chief honker, Alan Stern, of Nasa’s New Horizons mission..

I don’t really care what the “experts” say. I grew up with Pluto as a planet and it’ll always be a planet to me. If other bigger bodies exist, as far as I’m concerned, they should be admitted to the planet pantheon.

Textbooks have been revised accordingly. The upcoming generation, if they are allowed to study proper science at all, will see only 8 planets in the orbit of the Sun.
It’s a bit like all those WBA and Derby Co. fans we knew at school. They exist no more in the playgrounds of NI.

Posted by on Aug 15, 2008 @ 11:08 AMWhile the now eight planets might sniff their nose at Pluto, and while Neptune might still bitch about Pluto’s habit of cutting in front of it, I suppose I am too old to consider Pluto as a second-class citizen of the solar system.
Kudos to you Pete, for your firm stance against Pluto’s naysayers.
