Spotlight on Paisley…
Almost a valedictory feel to last night’s documentary on Ian Paisley. You can get it three parts: the first part above, with parts two and three here and here. Snippets worth noting is Paisley’s clear irritation from the pulpit in the Martyr’s Memorial after he was deposed as the Moderator of the Free Presbyterian. There’s also split screen on Paisley talking about Ahern in 2003 and his welcome of the Taoiseach to Ballymena last week. Jim Allister too, inflects a subtle hint that there are people outside the party who might well move into the DUP once the Paisley leadership is gone.
Mick Fealty @ 09:23 PM
As I said on another thread the lasting impression I had from the Spotlight programme is that Jim Allister is more bitter than I thought and has less charisma and charm to be a leader of a political party/movement to challenge the DUP.
Posted by on Feb 06, 2008 @ 10:44 PMMick, pt 3 not playing for me.
Posted by on Feb 06, 2008 @ 11:13 PMI was a little puzzled by the Spotlight reporter’s observation that the PIRA had ‘decommissioned and disbanded’ - when the Army Council, allegedly, is still in place.
Posted by on Feb 06, 2008 @ 11:15 PMShould, heaven forbid, Paisley become totally incapacitated, who assumes the mantle of First Minister?
Posted by on Feb 06, 2008 @ 11:23 PMjoeCanuck
relax, it won’t be Marty!
Posted by on Feb 06, 2008 @ 11:54 PMBatten down the hatches, Joe, it might be Robinson - without the restraining hand, allegedly, of Paisley snr!!
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 12:00 AMSweet jesus what an awful concept, the thoughts of Robbo as First Minister. Intellectually I knew that it was gonna happen, especially given Junior’s recent scandals. I can’t quite see Robbo, confidant of Billy Wright and more recently tireless defender of the UDA retirement fund, being a happy wee chuckle brother, so that might be an interesting dynamic.
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 12:06 AMWorks for me Nevin…
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 12:08 AMSo it definitely wouldn’t be Marty, temporarily?
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 12:13 AMjoeCanuck
definitely not!
It will be Robo though.
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 12:21 AMWe pray for the continued good health of our First Minister…
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 01:21 AMThanks, Mick. There seems to be a Vista/MediaPlayer/Browser conflict at this end!!
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 01:37 AMWhat a disgusting individual Paisley Sr is. Full of vile hatred mixed with religious fundamentalism and topped off with a large helping of hypocracy.
Good riddance.Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 06:06 AMNot really disgusting, more the epitome of siege mentality, with modern unionism being the result of rather than the cause of the partition of Ireland. His latter years may well be a precursor of future unionism.
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 06:26 AMI guess you don’t believe in change or redemption, USA.
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 07:22 AMGas how political moderates on all sides were once hoping that Paisley would retire and let Robinson take charge as he was seen as more pragmatic and approachable. Paisley on the other hand has mellowed with age, like fruit which sweetens as it ripens. Robinson now appears stoney cold, unapproachable and stubborn.
Jim Allister is the new wannabe Paisley or Carson(the Dublin man); a much weaker version however, and just as well. Paranoid, belligerant, stubborn, acerbic, etc… all the traits of old Unionism; continually stirring the old pot trying to keep the old hatreds going. And sure look what happened to the ‘Real Unionist’ and ‘UK Unionist’ Robert McCartney. Looking at the old footage of Paisley, he was some character, driven with a mania of fundalmentalist religious fervour he definitely incited people for all the wrong reasons. However, people today, wouldn’t buy it anymore!
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 09:57 AMdefinitely not!
It will be Robo though.

How else could it be? Dodds? Mrs Robo? Sammy Wilson? Certainly not Junior, he’ll be off selling cut and shut Ford Cortina’s by then with any luck.
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 09:59 AMPaisley Jr on father’s MP payroll
An MLA who is doing his job will not have time to be a researcher for daddy; a committed researcher will not have time to fulfil the duties and obligations of an MLA.
Conclusion: - Moral vacuumPosted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 10:31 AMThe most surprising thing about the programme was that Mike Fealty has a suit!!!
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 10:50 AMAs Ian Paisley said in his sermon “Strange things are happening”. Strangest of all was his claim that many of his critics owed him their souls. Is he selling indulgences?
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 11:10 AMbp,
I like to keep people guessing…

Not so fast. It only proves he has a jacket- and the tie might be a clip on!
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 01:11 PMOn the evening of 17 November, 2 days after the Anglo-Irish Agreement, Ian Paisley compared Mrs Thatcher to Sennacherib, king of the Assyrians. (As all Sluggerites will know from Bible Class, Sennacherib was king of the Assyrians who tried to attack Jerusalem in the reign of King Hezekiah and whose army was decimated by the Angel of the Lord.) Paisley noted that Hezekiah was slain in the temple of his god by his two sons, and implied that Mrs Thatcher’s political fate might be similar. He was uncannily prescient, for that is exactly how the Iron Lady fell. Now, all these years later, I wonder if Papa Doc will be forced out the same way, slain by his political sons.
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 03:20 PMSo forensic in your attention to detail Darth. I’m saying nothing…
Posted by on Feb 07, 2008 @ 03:42 PMInteresting analysis, Watchman. So convinced is he that he is invincible, that recently Papa Doc has been warning critics within the church that they may suffer divine retribution if they attack “the Lord’s anointed” ie himself.
