Sexual Health worsening
The BBC is reporting a significant rise in sexually transmitted infections in teenagers and young people. The Department of Health are apparently about to produce a “Sexual Health Promotion Strategy” before the Stormont summer recess.
From the Department press release: Targets included in the Strategy include: increasing the number of teenagers delaying sexual activity; reducing the rate of births to teenage mothers; reducing the incidence of STIs; and reducing the access time to Genito Urinary Medicine GUM clinics to two working days.
The Children’s Commissioner also has a press release on the subject and a policy paper which outlines some of the problems.
One of her comments which particularly struck me was that about young people in Fermanagh having a sixty mile trip to the nearest clinic. In most things to do with modern acute health care centralisation is key (whatever John Robb may have had to say on the subject). Regarding largely out patient based specialities such as sexual health clinics, however, there is significant merit in rolling them out as widely as possible provided staff experience levels can be maintained.

Otherwise, the intended agenda here looks as if it’s on the proper track. In view of the previous thread, inspired by Donaldson’s populist round-robin, I cannot call it the “right” track, for fear of others (the apostrophists, perhaps) considering it the “Right” track.

Very small credit to McGimpsey...he and his department did nothing about this until the Children’s Commissioner issued their policy paper. In fact, his promise to have this long overdue policy (it’s about a year overdue so far) out by summer recess has so many caveats that I fear it will never arrive...and will it be properly resourced? Doubt it!

Thanks to his expertise applied locally he was able to get my mother to a centre of excellence for a life-saving operation a few years after that article was written. It was a magnificent piece of organisation, one that a highly centralised system could not have matched.

Lets get this out there before new students get to Queens/Jordanstown/Coleraine/Stranmillis etc in the autumn. Otherwise they will not know about such matters. And can concentrate on their studies.
The sad thing is we are employing armies of bureaucrats to reproduce this shite.
Don’t forget to eat your 5 a day fruit as well as wearing a condom, oh and smoking is bad for you.God bless the assembly and the civil service (all 30’000 of them)for this. At least we know our taxes are not going to waste.

Just checked, the NICCY press release and policy were issued at midnight, BBC covered the story, DHSSPS issued release, BBC updated story with info their health corr got on level of STDs...which perhaps vindicates my earlier point; would McGimpsey ever have issued his release and commitment to the Sexual Health Strategy if not for the NICCY Policy Paper being published (which I understand the DHSSPS received in advance)

A quick glance at NICCY’s policy paper indicates the need for combined action by DHSS, DE and the NIO. Then there will be a reaction from the churches ...

Posted by on May 14, 2008 @ 11:59 PMThat was Driftwood’s post Nevin...and it’s not the over 18s that the strategy is really needed (too late for most of them as I distantly recall from my QUB days!) rather it’s the primary and post-primary pupils who need a well organised and comprehensive Relationship and Sexual Education Curriculum, with the DHSSPS providing the necessary support and planned responses for all other circumstances i.e. when a young person suspects they have acquired an STI

How many kids in Ireland alone hd their first experience of sex at the hands of a Church official?
if the worst us secular liberals do is make them wear some crappy clothes, I’ll take that over a return to the days when the church told us all how to act and think, and all the while they were raping our kids in the background.Let’s have education, ignorance and making sex a taboo subject is what allowed the abuse to continue for so long.

There is something in that.
I am also sure the IRA/SF covered up a fair bit of abuse in the areas it controlled.
The idea of going to the RUC about a priest in 1972 was probably not a working idea.
Big Brother No1 might hopefully deal be asked to explain that at his next PSNI strategy session.

In England & the USA, teachers are light years ahead (or behind if we are being judgemental) in the abuse department.
Teachers in the United States would perhaps be involved in more sex crime in a period of months than priests were (discoverably) in fifty years.
I reckon it is because iffy Priests couldn’t gear up for the internet.

The planned parenthood thing is a total biz.
If Andy came back they’d get him to stick a condom on the banana on the Velvets first album.
Some school grrls (I hope I spelt that right) have asked feminists in the USA for money to do a campaign over here, in Britain rather.
Save us from icky lessons, I gather sex-ed is a bit vomitable in some schools.
