Scotland’s loss…..
Robert Coulter has invited Donald Trump to look to the Antrim coast for his golf course in the wake of his rejection from a Scottish council.
Michael Shilliday @ 02:42 PM
Trump could consult McSweeney on schmoozing the local politicians. Does Ian Ă“g play golf I wonder? He’ll certainly take it up on hearing this news.
Posted by on Dec 02, 2007 @ 03:28 PMThere are too many golf courses here and in Scotland. Lets forget about it!
Posted by on Dec 02, 2007 @ 04:51 PMPaisley and Storey (2005) re. Bushmills Golf Resort
Moyle District Council has received plans from Ballymoney-based architects R Robinson & Sons for the development of a £45m golf resort on a 356-acre site between the Giant’s Causeway and Bushmills. 23-Oct-2001
Regional Development Strategy (2005): “SPG-ECON 10 To identify major tourism development opportunities for the private sector to develop ‘destination resort’ complexes throughout Northern Ireland, based on distinctive tourism themes;”

It is in England now isn’t it?Posted by on Dec 02, 2007 @ 06:13 PMCoulter “can’t believe” that Aberdeenshire turned down Trump’s proposal. Has he considered why or does he just see it as an opportunity to get a press statement out and hopefully meet a celebrity? If there is one thing County Antrim doesn’t need it is is a massive golf complex. Northern Ireland already has at least two first rate golf courses. Assuming that Trump’s main interest is in a links course, could Coulter inform us which part of the Antrim coast he would like to see wrecked?
Jakers, I used to think it was Coulter jnr who was off the wall.
Posted by on Dec 02, 2007 @ 08:50 PMIf it wasn’t environmentally sound for the Scottish Coast, it certainly isn’t for ours.
As far as golf is concerned, I subscribe to the “Falling Down” philosophy…
Bill Foster: “Five! What the hell are you trying to do? Kill me with a golf ball? It’s not enough you have all these beautiful acres fenced in for your little game, but you gotta kill me with a golf ball? You should have children playing here, you should have families having picnics, you should have a goddamn petting zoo. But instead you’ve got these stupid electric carts for you old men with nothing better to do.”
Oh...and in a region of Europe with one of the lowest ratios of play-areas to population, I ESPECIALLY agree with the above.
Posted by on Dec 02, 2007 @ 10:21 PMlowest ratios of play-areas to population
That’s totally amazing, Raven. Should be room for a few more Botanic Gardens. I spent lots of happy times in there when I was at Queens. (Ignoring other certain queens, of course.)
Posted by on Dec 02, 2007 @ 11:29 PMThe battle cry of Unionist politicians for many years was"Ulster is not for sale”.How times have changed.
Posted by on Dec 03, 2007 @ 02:48 AMDanny, i don’t remember unionists buying ulster in the first place, never mind it being theirs to sell.
Anyway, i get my kicks off Tiger Woods on the pc. all the fun without the dread of samlltalk with doctors and accountants at the 19th !Posted by on Dec 03, 2007 @ 03:10 AM*smalltalk* (must type better)
Posted by on Dec 03, 2007 @ 03:11 AMI was just making the point that -for example- Unionists urged people to boycott southern goods,I remember 1 in particular urging people to boycott Dunnes stores in Larne. Now it seems that anything goes-for the right price. Was it Mark Twain who described golf as “a good walk spoiled”?
Posted by on Dec 03, 2007 @ 07:16 AMThis golf course idea should probably not be encouraged, not because golf isnt a delightful way to spend the afternoon wandering around the lawn chasing a wee whiteball, but because if it has the trump name attached it will be garish and exclusionary and not at all fitting in with the local atmosphere
Posted by on Dec 03, 2007 @ 03:02 PMI feared this was a done deal in the north of Scotland.
Golf links are a very bad use of land IMHo.
This development would have obliterated a fabulous coastline of fragile machairPosted by on Dec 03, 2007 @ 03:49 PMJust how many billion dollar investment offers does NI get? Scotland either for that matter. So its a golf complex. Better than nothing.
Posted by on Dec 04, 2007 @ 08:44 PMI believe Sweeney owns a massive stretch of land left of the giant’s causeway, up to Portballintrae beach. It’s called Ulster way, so maybe the golf course could be similarly named.
Posted by on Dec 05, 2007 @ 01:25 AMWise up sportsman-for all the drivel about inward investment and golf-it’s just an excuse to build thousands of houses which will be unaffordable to the people of the area-holiday homes for the rich. How much does all the construction in portballintrae benefit anyone-other than the developer-yes the council get a few thouand quid in rates-at the expense of any kind of sustainable community development.
Posted by on Dec 05, 2007 @ 02:06 AMSo tell me, Danny - and notwithstanding my outlined views above - can you guarantee me that Larne would have said no...?
Was it not an area outlined as a “special economic development zone” a few years ago? Would the representatives of the good burghers of Larne be as quick as you to turn it away...?
By the way, there was a post a few days back about Craigavon’s Chief Executive woes...that all cleared up down in Larne now, is it...? Just wondering, in an off-topic fashion…
Posted by on Dec 05, 2007 @ 04:00 AMWill Paisley play ‘Trump’ card?
Posted by on Dec 05, 2007 @ 12:18 PMI wish I could but I can only speak for myself and alas there are others obsessed with development for whatever reason,I am not against proper reasonable sustainable development where the need exists, not where it is being done to make a fast buck.Currently the need is for social housing-not holiday homes.
I do not recall any efforts being made to make Larne a special case although it may have happened in Carrick.
That process is on-going.
I can only speak for myself and I will continue to call it as I see it.I will not apologise or try to make excuses for how others make their decisions.Posted by on Dec 05, 2007 @ 12:34 PMPlease go away Mr. Trump, our fair land with its stratospheric economy does not want these jobs and tourism dollars. Nor does it want the publicity jolt that a large development with your name attached to it would bring.
No, our dilapidated grey little towns and villages are just fine: please don’t spoil the character here in the North.
