There’ll be some cheering in the portacabins of Northern Ireland today.
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:27 PMEl Mat,
I don’t think that is right. Pete may have a rogue figure up there, if he is correct APNI favour the TUV and don’t transfer to the DUP.
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:27 PMI’ll bore folk with this particular aperçu just one more time: PR, in all its forms, is squalid, artificial, and in the truest sense, anti-democratic, in that, all votes are not equal. How on earth does it make democratic sense that eg an Alliance voter can, in effect, have their vote counted 3 or even 4 times? First yella fella, then, maybe stoop, then, if it ends there, transferring finally to, let’s say, the UUP? When, in contrast, the poor sod who has voted DUP sees his vote do just that - vote DUP, not magically fliting round the place, endlessly biting at the cherry. A rotten system, and thank God we don’t have it for elections that matter.

UUP – 1571
the DUP have lost! what a humiliation for PAISLEY.
Well, to be honest to history, clearly its now “PAISLEY MUST GO!”

Are you sure of the post-Alliance transfer figures? They would mean the DUP picked up absolutely no transfers from the elimination of the Alliance candidate, which would be odd, if only through human error.
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:28 PMSeems TUV supporters thought that at least the UUP were more honest in what they did, as compared to the DUP.
The First and Deputy First may not be seen much together in future and the DUP position may harden.
Small consolation to the UUP however to have to rely on TUV votes however.
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:29 PMElamt are people not entitled to vote whoever they want. Are you now telling me that the SDLP wouldn’t want transfers from the DUP. Your ability to look for the negative in anything Sinn Fein is only to be commended. Another area were Sinn Fein outpoll the floundering SDLP. If this was football the manager would be long gone.
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:30 PMThis is an electoral disaster for the DUP . The discontentment which was evident in Ian Paisley’s ejection from the FPC moderator’s has now been translated into substantial votes for the TUV .
This is a great day for Jim Allister - he has managed to avoid the fate of Bob MCc and also it is an excellent day for the UUP with TUV supporters transfering to them rather than the DUP . If that pattern were to be repeated in an assembly election the DUP would be in severe trouble .
Ian Paisley’s position as leader of the party must be in doubt now . His chuckle brothers strategy is deeply unpopular with the grassroots and his son’s antics only add to the woes .
Expect Paisley to be removed within a year .Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:30 PMSurprised by the result - didn’t think TUV would transfer to UUP. Clearly the anti-DUP element of that vote was strong.
What was the turn-out?
And everyone please don’t get carried away about the significance of a council by-election.
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:33 PMFabulous, truly fabulous. I’m off to sing that de teum Enoch did all those years ago.
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:35 PMWhere are the DUP now?
Where is the “Paul will walk it”?
The tide is turning, DUP watch you dont get caught in the flood!
ITS A GREAT DAY FOR ULSTER!

Well it isn’t their best day is it. 3700 voters had their say and it wasn’t for the DUP

“Expect Paisley to be removed within a year”. I don’t think he will get to the summer recess.
This is a disaster for the Paisley-led DUP, a small disater but a disaster nonetheless. The obvious winner is Jim Allister who by telling his voters to transfer to the UUP has hit on the tactic to hurt his erstwhile collegues where it hurts. However, the real winner may well be Robinson who surely cannot bide his time any longer. Blame the cosy relationship with the Provo godfather, blame the Bertie friendly use of language, blame the boy but the time has come for the deputy to become the leader.
And well done Cllr-to-be Black.
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:40 PMPaul P, calm down and enjoy humble pie for lunch.
Willowfield, I’m not too surprised that TUV didn’t transfer to the DUPers, given all the bad feeling. At least the UUP are honest liberals, not power-hungry, flip-flopping egotists.
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:40 PMe.g. “This is an electoral disaster for the DUP .”
OK, Willowfield. So what do you call it?
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:40 PMGeorge (12.30), don’t be ridiculous. The Chuckle Brothers caricature is hardly a ‘strategy’ Paisley thought up one day. Clearly he’s not allowed to laugh or smile… or even breathe such is the bitterness ripping Unionism apart.
TUV transferring to UUP suggests a group of Unionists utterly bereft of principle, determined only to be opportunistic. Yet they can’t see the big picture: if this behaviour was repeated at an Assembly Election, the other Chuckle Brother could end up First Minister under the current rules.
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:41 PM“Vote TUV get UUP. Well done Jim.”
oh dear
is that really the best the Dundela Avenue spinners can come up with?
This is a very good day’s work for the TUV. The DUP brought in all the big guns in a by election that Robinson forced on the local DUP specifically to crush the TUV, and he has been spectacularly rebuffed. Tho’ in one sense he couldn’t lose, since the ould croc will be made the scapegoat. He’ll be gone by Christmas- if not as FM certainly as leaderBut the main aim was always to marginalise Allister, and what it has done instead is allow TUV to present itself as the kingmaker between the two main Unionist parties. It has given the UUP a shot in the arm which might even encourage it to start acting like a proper party again. And it has destroyed the legend of Peter the electoral genius
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:42 PMThe DUP spinners are going to need a high speed centrifuge to make anything from this.
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:43 PMSW
Who created those rules?
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:43 PMMy goodness, where is Achilles? where is Ajax? where are all the other heroes of the DUP press office? How pleasant it will be to see the Croc leave the stage for the last time, the boos bouncing off his bigoted bonce. Slabbered away at the captain for meeting Lemass, and here we are today, PR man for the IRA. Good riddance, you’ve been a long time going.
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:45 PMWhen was it that the DUP said they were going to have their Party General Meeting?
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:49 PMSW,
Nappy much?
There go the toys out of the pram!!!!!!!!!
A GREAT RESULT!
Posted by on Feb 14, 2008 @ 12:49 PMFrustrated Democrat,
Democracy creates those rules in the end, though no form of democracy is perfect of course (eg. proportional representation).
All I’m concerned about are the long-term consequences of a Unionist attitude that centres on killing off Paisley… at all cost?
