Quote of the Day
Mark Durkan’s alter ego on Folks on the Hill may never shut up but occassionally the real-life version does provide an amusing soundbite. Today’s offering is:
“Giving vetoes to the DUP is like asking Attila the Hun to mind your horse.”
Fair Deal @ 10:44 AM
terrific. just so funny. i wish Mark Durkan wouls spend as much energy into providing desperately needed leadership for nationalists and democrats as he does dreaming up these witty, vote winning lines.
Posted by on Nov 22, 2006 @ 11:47 AMNot to be pedantic, but . . . yer ancient Huns *loved* their horses, as you might expect from a nomadic warrior caste. And would have no more have harmed one than we’d, for example, casually dash a baby’s brains out on a hard floor.

Delightfully put.
Posted by on Nov 22, 2006 @ 12:07 PMAnother fascinating quote from Mark Durkan in search of a proper home on Slugger but I post it here for others to have a look:
Mark Durkan: Is the hon. Gentleman aware of the deeply held suspicion that some of those involved in the McCartney murder were MI5 agents?
This was his intervention during a debate last night in Westminster regarding the St Andrews Agreement Bill.
Posted by on Nov 22, 2006 @ 12:15 PMYes Durkan is right the DUP have a veto in the Assembly for the first time and its tied down in the Leglislation, there will be wailing and knashing of teeth in the Republician heartlands.
Posted by on Nov 22, 2006 @ 12:38 PMMy favourite Durkan one-liner “Gerry Adams has been on more roads to Damascus than a Syrian taxi driver.”
Posted by on Nov 22, 2006 @ 12:55 PMKarl Rove: “Not to be pedantic, but . . . yer ancient Huns *loved* their horses, as you might expect from a nomadic warrior caste. And would have no more have harmed one than we’d, for example, casually dash a baby’s brains out on a hard floor. “
And there you have it. Durkan should have to apologize to the horse-loving, empire looting horsie set.
On the other hand, Karl, the Huns were known to be awful casual about other peoples’ property. I don’t care how much Huns loved horses, I wouldn’t want Attila looking after *my* horse.

Dream on…

I think the point he was making wasn’t that the DUP would harm the veto but would use it to ride roughshod over the rights and aspirations of the pro-powersharing majority.
But I think he’s trying to shut the stable d’Hont after the rejectionist horse has bolted.
{sorry}
Posted by on Nov 22, 2006 @ 01:53 PMRecent Durkan quip I enjoyed on ‘Hearts and Minds’ (describing the interminable fuc k-aboutery of the DUP in their handling of negotiations) “The DUP are now on a pub-crawl of preconditions”.
Posted by on Nov 22, 2006 @ 02:22 PMAnother one:
Durkan, Jeffrey and Ian Beag were in a warm departure lounge, somewhere in Africa, whilst on some trade mission or suchlike. Conditions weren’t being helped much by a malfunctioning fan. Ian Beag decided to fiddle with it in an attempt to improve its performance whereupon part of the fan fell off striking him.
“First time I’ve ever seen the fan hit the sh1t”, quipped Durkan.

That story is false and the magazine that published it had to offer a grovelling apology.

It is still very funny true or not and as for the DUP Veto thing of course they will ride roughshod over everyone else it is the only thing they are able to do.Constructive dialogue with *any* opposition and the DUP are all at sea !!

I read that in a Gail Walker interview with Jeffrey Donaldson in the Belfast Telegraph, in which Jeffrey himself recounted this incident.
Posted by on Nov 22, 2006 @ 03:28 PM‘“Giving vetoes to the DUP is like asking Attila the Hun to mind your horse.” ‘
Mark is off course yet again :)
What he should have said was Durkan .
‘Giving vetoes to the DUP like asking Genghis Khan to look after your wife ‘
