Police officer shot
A disturbance in Carrickfergus, being linked to UDA “tensions in the loyalist community in south east Antrim” the internal feud within the UDA, has left two in hospital. One man was seriously assualted and a police officer wounded by gunfire. Three men have been arrested.

Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 08:49 PMHeck,
What about our little corner of Ireland that is so EFF’D up that it has terrorists in government (they did kill people you know) and religious bigots who control power in this wee corner of ours....you make me laugh....its all the brits fault....nothing to do with people like you right enough......
Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 08:58 PMP&J;- “The UDA gets very very little political support from the Unionist community. Compare this with the majority of Roman Catholics in Northern Ireland who support Sinn Fein IRA death squad members in the Government.”
And it would appear from the executive institutions in place P&J;, that those people who vote for the DUP and UUP support Sinn Finn members in government also.
Isn’t it great that some of us can look to the future rather than living in the past.
Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 08:58 PM‘All you need to do is wear a Northern Ireland tracksuit top. This is the current de rigeur fashion item amongst discerning UDA Brigadiers.’
Noticed that in today’s paper, hardly surprising then when they put up owc flags with uda flags in many unionist areas.

A lovely rendition, I must say.
Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 09:45 PMNot to distract from the fascinating reminisces about death squads and which side of the soldier/murderer/idealist/bigot divides various elected representatives are on is this the start of a great new war or merely a gun in the hands of a disgruntled (and none too smart) criminal?
Anyone?

“all prods are bigots dont you know.....even, and I’ll wisper this...Nothern Ireland fans.....even the kids...imagine supporting your own country”
I can’t speak for Tim and I certainly don’t think that all prods are bigots.
However, anyone who attended NI matches at Windsor Park for decades couldn’t be blamed for thinking that all NI fans were. The pro UDA/UVF chants, flags etc. The sickening chants about the Virgin Mary and the songs about the innocent Catholics being butchered.
I’ll whisper this - all Catholics like me who don’t support NI are bigots - we all imagined those chants + flags, we imagined the players playing for their country and being booed (or even having their life threatened) because of your religion.
My, what bigots we are.
Posted by on Jul 23, 2007 @ 02:53 AMBilly I’ll think you;’ff find that the sickening chants thing works both ways. I remember attening a Linfield Cliftonville game at Windsor Park, an interesting experience for a glentoran fan like myself, a few weeks after the Shankill Bombing. The cliftonville crowd sang a pretty wee ditty “boom boom boom shake the shankill” to the tune of DJ Jazzy jeff and the Fresh Princes Boom Shake the room. Even then I accepted that it was a mindless minority who sang that and I didn’t judge all Cliftonville fans by the example, so why can’t you accept the same that only a mindless minority of NI fans sing sectarian songs?
Posted by on Jul 23, 2007 @ 09:32 AMgiven that the policeman was shot in the back is it not fair to say that the terrorists were right behind the police service?

I certainly agree that it is a small mindless minority now.
I am referring to the 70s + 80s when it certainly was not. I was asked to attend a NI/Scotland match in the late 80’s (we got some corporate tickets) and politely agreed albeit reluctantly.
We were sitting in pretty much the best seats in the house surrounded by businessmen in expensive suits - not the UVF/UDA types on the kop.
The anti-Catholic vitriol that was expressed by quite a few of these businessmen against the Celtic players in the Scotland (and Catholic players in the NI team) was disgusting (2 of the 3 Celtic players weren’t even Catholics!!).
In all fairness, my two colleagues who are both Protestants were also disgusted.
This was, of course, in addition to the constant booing of the Catholic players in the NI team BY THE OWN “FANS”.
I accept that the IFA have made big efforts over the last 5 years. However, this was mainly motivated by the awful international publicity
they got culminating in the Neil Lennon death threat. If “football for all” succeeds in bringing people together - fine. And if some Catholics want to support NI - that’s fine also.
However, it’s way too late for people like me. I daresay that if you had been treated the way Catholic NI fans were for decades - you would feel the same way and I wouldn’t blame you.
I’m glad that people like Rob can take their kids to NI matches and enjoy a better atmosphere - frankly, it still has some way to go ("no surrender") etc before any impartial person would classify it as a family atmosphere.
However, it’s laughable the way Catholics like me who don’t support NI are called bigots etc by NI supporters on this site.
Perhaps, if the IFA and a large majority of NI supporters hadn’t been prepared to tolerate decades of Catholic players and supporters being treated like shite, they would have a case.
The truth is that most NI Catholics support the RoI as a result of the way they or their family were treated for decades. I certainly wouldn’t expect anyone, regardless of colour or creed, to willingly accept the sort of vile bigotted behaviour on show at Windsor for decades.
In respect of NI Catholics supporting the RoI and NI young players opting to play for the RoI, the IFA and NI fans are simply reaping what they have sowed.
