Police officer shot
A disturbance in Carrickfergus, being linked to UDA “tensions in the loyalist community in south east Antrim” the internal feud within the UDA, has left two in hospital. One man was seriously assualted and a police officer wounded by gunfire. Three men have been arrested.
Fair Deal @ 09:34 AM
The BBC news report at 9.00 said UVF - but then it was the English news.
Does this now provide Margaret Ritchie the perfect excuse to hold back the cheque?

Thanks for that. I was going by online reports and made what looks like a dodgy assumption. My apologies for my error.
I have replaced it with for a direct quote from the article.
Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 10:03 AMGiven recent tensions I believe the BBC have probably got it wrong Fair Deal - as I stated, it was the English version as opposed to the local news so they’ve probably just picked three letters out of a hat and ran with it.

A crime is a crime is a crime. Unionists should be kicked out of government for this. Given that the Unionist criminals killed the first soldier in the Troubles, will they also get the honour of whacking the last peeler?

RTÉ has the quote from Frankie Gallagher
UPRG spokesman Frankie Gallagher linked the trouble to a renegade faction of the UDA and said there should be no knee-jerk reaction from politicians.
‘The UPRG would, on behalf of all people in our community, totally condemn the criminal acts last night by a minority of people who carried out intimidation against people in the Larne and Carrickfergus areas and shot a policeman.
‘The UPRG is calling on all its people to support the police and is appealing for calm amongst its people across Northern Ireland.
‘We area also calling for no knee-jerk reaction to this intimidation, it is an action of criminality and our society doesn’t want them.’
Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 11:24 AMJoe, don’t be silly.
I wonder if the UDA will hand the names of those involved in this over to the police ?
Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 11:52 AMI hope the government puts that check on express delivery after all with a genuine statement of “its not us, its them” I am sure we all feel better and re-assured that the peeler was shot by accident and not with a loyalist paramilitary weapon because they have all been decomissione..... oh wait never mind
Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 11:57 AMby the way i think Joe is being perfectly reasonable. This is exactly what would be comming out of the unionist community if it was the IRA
Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 11:59 AM‘The UPRG is calling on all its people to support the police and is appealing for calm amongst its people across Northern Ireland.’
This is hardly new. It was the rationale behind the death squads.
Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 11:59 AM“The UPRG would, on behalf of all people in our community”
Curious one that. Is that the loyalist community, the Unionist community, the Protestant community, the whole community, just the drug-dealers, just the extortionists, just the good-UDA or who exactly?
Given that they have continued to fail in garnering elctoral support, just who is it exactly that the UPRG think that they represent?
Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 12:24 PMPardon my geography - but this does relate to the ‘South East Antrim brigade’ given where it happened? Or should I go back to school?
Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 12:51 PMJoe O’Reilly (/Sean/Whatever name) - “A crime is a crime is a crime. Unionists should be kicked out of government for this.”
Haven’t you been following election results over the years? The UDA gets very very little political support from the Unionist community. Compare this with the majority of Roman Catholics in Northern Ireland who support Sinn Fein IRA death squad members in the Government.
Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 01:58 PMWith unionist communities full of armed & active terrorists, its hardly surprising that people get shot.
Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 02:08 PMJoe O’Reilly
if I’m wrong someone will correct me but I think your facts are incorrect,
I think the first soldier killed in the troubles was Gunner Curtis who was shot by the IRA on the New Lodge Load.
The first policeman killed in the troubles was indeed killed by loyalists. Again going by memory (being old has its advantages!) his name was constable Arbuckle and he was killed on the Shankill Road by loyalist gunmen.
The first bombings of the troubles were also carried out by the UVF against water pipelines going from silent valley to belfast.
I also think the first civilian to be killed in the current troubles was barman Peter Ward who was murdered by Gusty Spence and his UVF collegues.
I also think that the RUC were also one of the fist to the party, beating to death Samual Daveny in his home in the Bogside before the provos launched their campaign.
This is from memory but I am sure some sluggerette will correct the facts if I am wrong.

Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 02:24 PMM. Ritchie must be jumping with joy. Now she can push ahead with the sectarian funding policy. Pump money into catholic swing (between SDLP and SF) areas. Deny all protestant areas funding and adopt a moral face as a cover. And they call this government.
Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 03:56 PMHarold.
I spent a large part of my life growing up in Castlemara estate, and am neither loyalist nor vermin.
Whilst it is true there are far too many paramilitary scumbags around the place, we need to watch our language, lest we heap more insult upon the majority of law abiding people that not only live there, but are already burdened by having these scumbags amongst them in the first place.Posted by on Jul 22, 2007 @ 03:57 PMDavid-
“M. Ritchie must be jumping with joy. Now she can push ahead with the sectarian funding policy. Pump money into catholic swing (between SDLP and SF) areas. Deny all protestant areas funding and adopt a moral face as a cover.”
What a ridiculous comment. Margaret Ritchie has admirably shown since she became Minister that she is concerned with the real problems in people’s lives, regardless of their background. She has been to loyalist areas on several occasions, lest you forget. I’ve no idea what the mechanisms are behind the ridiculous British Direct Rule funding plan for loyalists, but no doubt if it is pulled, the money will be spent on dealing with the real issues faced by people in those communities.
“And they call this government.”
No, they call the actual operation of the Executive in the real world ‘government’. What you describe is a mere flight of fancy which thankfully only exists within the confines of your own petty mind.

I assume you are a Republican of whichever hue, it is what we have come to expect on Slugger from your ilk.I am a Unionist and Gallagher and his henchmen of the URPG neither speak for or represent me and I am sure like me many Unionists either with a small or large P condemn the acts of all the UDA and their alleged political spokesperson I can assure you that they are not doing this in my name or with my consent.
TAFKABO
Well written according to Harold every Unionist is scum so you know where he comes from. I suppose it was not worth the reply giving his ilk space on Slugger is scandalous. Insults are easy from a sedentary position.

give up the self righteous nonsense
unionists want to be part of a country that is waging an illegal war and is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians.
they want to be part of a country that ran loyalist death squads in our little corner of ireland.
give it a break
