Nominations closed
Apparently there are over 250 candidates, the names of whom will be published here.
Michael Shilliday @ 05:41 PM
I noted that the BBC were taking head and shoulder pictures of all the candidates… Some people weren’t expecting this (as the pictures will tell) but are they still nearly all male middle-class candidates?
It will be interesting to see which party has the best gender balance? Which parties have a good representation of people with a disablity? Which party has a balance of age? Or does the male middle-class voter not really give a damm about such things?

Dougal,
Thankfully the average male middle-class voter isn’t sexist or ageist or racist and therefore will not give a damn about these things. What we need is to make sure that every voter ignores gender and age and so on and simply votes for the best candidate. What was your point? Are you talking about how parties choose candidates and what type of people put themselves forward for nomination, or are you talking about how the people vote?
Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 06:11 PMShit!!!! devil damn it,
I wanted to stand but I couldn’t get my full birth certificate for proof of identification.
The questions I could answer were
Name - The Devil
Occupation - Professional Devil
Sex - Yes please
Location - Anywhere, but a bed is bestBut then I was asked questions I couldn’t answer
Fathers name - ??? I don’t know
Mothers maiden name - ??? Maiden name! I don’t even know her first name.
Place of birth - ??? somewhere very hot I would imagine
Age - ??? I don’t know, what do you think yourself
Religion - ??? Your taking the piss aren’t you.
Nationality - ??? I don’t know Hellian maybe?Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 06:15 PM‘Or does the male middle-class voter not really give a damm about such things?’
Dougal:
Why blame them?
Isn’t it everyone else that is to blame if they continue to vote for these male middle-class people? I take it you assume that male middle-class already vote for their own kind.
Women make up over half of the population. Why do you think they continue to elect these male middle-class people?
Are they stupid? Or disinterested?
Do you think that the ‘male middle-class’ makes up 80% of the population? And that this demographic conspires to kep women and the disabled out?
Wise up.
Politics is about getting involved. If it’s mainly the male middle-class who do so, who do you think is going to be elected?
Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 06:22 PM250+ candidates, 108 seats.
Not bad odds.
Better than the odds in a first past the post system election.
It won’t help Mitchel McLaughlin though.
I say up the anti-Provo republican candidates. Split that vote!

The UKUP certainly is .Standing in six separate constituencies is party leader Bob McCartney. Now just for ‘devilment’ supposing he was elected in each of the constituencies in which he is standing would he can only get paid the one salary (I should hope). Those in NI who are seriously concerned about saving taxpayers money while sending a strong ‘message ‘ to the rest of the gobshites can do so by electing McCartney in each of these 6 constituencies .
I hear he can also walk across water which is another good reason to elect him :) I read the North Channel has not yet been crossed by foot so this could be Bob’s time to make a big splash ?
Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 06:57 PMgreenflag,
If Bob McCartney gets elected to more than one seat, he can nominate people to take those others seats for him (just like leaders can, and have, used votes of dead MLAs).Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 06:59 PMWhat about a thread on party political broadcasts? They are making very amusing viewing so far.
Breastbeating from Paisley and lots of Irish and diddly dee music from Adams!!
Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 07:03 PMGood point robo,
Also, the party political broadcasts should all be available online in my opinion - I don’t suppose the BBC or somebody do it already?Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 07:06 PMQ) For the devil candidate. Why do you have a hole in the end of your penis?
A) So that the people can see you are open minded.
Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 07:15 PMNot that intelligent Bob will win more than one seat. I understand if he did it would cause a bit of trouble as on one thought of this. He couldnt automatically pick someone else. It would be funny to see what would happen.
According to ken reid Bob is standing in 6, yes 6, constituencies - what a plonker!
Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 07:45 PMBob McCartney i dont think has much chance of being elected even though i quite like the man aside his arrogance.
I hope the Republican candidates take votes off teh SF candidates, but please not elected. SF are bad enough as a memorial to their bloody terrorist campaign in Ulster but with real nutters in the assembly it would be a case of salt in the wounds.
As yet I havent seen any political broadcasts, I do hope they are available online or at least in some unoffical capacity ie Youtube or the like.
Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 07:51 PMBob is joined on the UKUP ticket by a former DUP MLA who went before his constituency association for re-selection and was de-selected not over his opposition to party policy but because he was a duff MLA.
Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 07:53 PMWho was that now and which ballot paper is this!!which one of the 6 that Bob’s on.
Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 07:56 PMQueens unionist - do you support sharing power with SF?

altough in theory I do not support democracy.
In my Ideal Northern Ireland we would be headed and ruled by a benevolent dictatorship.Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 08:00 PM“Bob is joined on the UKUP ticket by a former DUP MLA who went before his constituency association for re-selection and was de-selected not over his opposition to party policy but because he was a duff MLA”
Oh come on, spare us the bull turd, Iris took a pick against Ennis and had him dumped.
btw, if he was so happy with DUP policy, then why did he go to McCartney? Give it up Simon

OK - a few contradictions aside, what the hell are you going on about?
If SF are the 2nd largest party after this election due to the amount of votes they get in a democratic election - will you support going into Govt with them? No spin please, a yes or no answer will suffice.
Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 08:13 PMI’m afraid it appears that George has took the hump with his former party and wants his revenge, he might cause them to miss on an extra seat in Strangford, but he’s unlikely to be back on his Stormont salary.
For weeks now all DUP MLA’s have knew the genearl direction that the party is headed. How can Ennis suddenly convert to McCartney who is hardly a committed devolutionist?
(Cynical, do you think I’m Simon Hamilton?)
Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 08:14 PMIf Bob McCartney gets elected to more than one seat, he can nominate people to take those others seats for him (just like leaders can, and have, used votes of dead MLAs).
Only if they’re on his list of nominated replacements; otherwise there’s a by-election.
I’d really, really, really appreciate it if one of our many happy readers put the Party Election Broadcasts on Youtube with a common tag like “NI 2007 Election Broadcasts”.
Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 08:18 PMSeems the BBC have the list before the EONI
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/6359215.stm
Given the speed of their counts why did I expect the website to be any different?
Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 08:30 PMI support power sharing with all truly democratic people,
altough in theory I do not support democracy. So you wouldn’t share power with yourself then ?
Are you an example of the calibre of people going to QUB these days ? If so the place really has gone downhill. How the hell did you get in ?
In my Ideal Northern Ireland we would be headed and ruled by a benevolent dictatorship.
Dictatorships can’t be benevolent. I should know.
Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 08:32 PMI’ve just had a copy of the UUP election broadcast leaked to me.
Posted by on Feb 13, 2007 @ 08:33 PMSeems the BBC have the list before the EONI
It says “This list for the 18 constituencies is not yet complete.” So not the final word.
One thing that may delay the Electoral Office is if there are objections or irregularities with papers. Also, when I rang them today they said 8-9 this evening so it’s not too late yet.
