New Parliament building

I see that an academic wants to redevelop the Waterfront area of Belfast, to include a new Parliament building.  The Newsletter’s page three has a map of the proposed design, which unless my geography is deficient, will involve turning the Short Strand into a train station.

  1. 3,000 people in Short Strand being moved out of their century-old community to satisfy the designs of some academic. Yeah right…

It’s often been said that many academics have a less tenuous grasp of real-life. This maybe proves the point…

As for the train station proposal, Central Station is only 100 yards away from his proposed train station site in Short Strand !  Has anyome told him...??

  2. Surely it would make more sense using the lower Newtownards Road area as the train station site. Its full of empty houses, large areas of waste ground & empty shops.

  3. Whilst I would not wish to see a new parliament building, I would dearly love to see the Short Strand demolished.

  4. Ziznivy, would you acre to clarify your remarks re the Short Strand?

  5. Sorry - typo, obviously that is ‘care to qualify your remarks’

    Posted by  on Jul 02, 2007 @ 11:52 AM
  6. Reds, not particularly. It seems fairly self-explanatory.

Posted by Ziznivy on Jul 02, 2007 @ 11:55 AM
  7. It’s not really self explanatory. Were it so, I would not have asked you to clarify your remarks.

  8. I feel that batter use could be made of the Short Strand area by demolishing it and building something else. A shiny new train station need not necessarily be my preference. Perhaps a multi-sports atadium! :-)

  9. So we should just go around knocking down working class communities, because people think we could build something new and shiny their? Hmmm. Ok. What do we do about the 1000 plus people who live there? Just turf them out?

    Posted by  on Jul 02, 2007 @ 12:05 PM
  10. Rehouse them somewhere where they are less unsightly.

Posted by Ziznivy on Jul 02, 2007 @ 12:09 PM
  11. That said, I would prioritise knocking down the village.

  12. ‘Rehouse them somewhere where they are less unsightly’

Sums up the new breed of n.i football supporter.

Just the same old sectarian bigotry, how sad.

  13. The Village is a loyalist area. :-)

  14. “Turning the Short Strand into a train station” - sounds good to me. While we’re at it how about similarly demolishing the Markets, Donegall Pass, the Village, Sandy Row and all of the other anachronistic pockets of ‘working’ class vermin throughout the city. How dare these scum expect to live within walking distance of the city centre without working or behaving in a civilised, law-abiding fashion.

  15. Have I missed something?  Don’t we already have a Parliament building?

Do we really want something ghastly like the monstrosity at the bottom of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh?

  16. “‘working’ class vermin”
“How dare these scum expect to live within walking distance of the city centre without working or behaving in a civilised, law-abiding fashion.”

As one of these ‘vermin’ and ‘scum’ who has lived my entire life in working class communities and have lived in one of these communities for 15 years that people now propose bulldozing. I would like to point out, I work, I am a private property owner and have no criminal record.  Are those who don’t fit the stereotyping permitted to stay?

  17. Maybe you really buck the trend and don’t expect oppotunities and employment to be parachuted to your door, just because you’re part of a “community”.

I would have thought the answer was obvious from my post FD - of course you can stay. My objection is to the use of my taxes to subsidise the housing of work-shy, criminal and invariably sectarian scum within desirable areas of Belfast.

Yep, just to prove you’re not a bigot!

    3,000 people in Short Strand

You left out the definite article.  Are you an American, macswiney?

  21. “Yep, just to prove you’re not a bigot! ”

Certainly not. It’s because I live closer to the Village and have more ample opportunity to experience the unique “culture” of the area.

IIRC the owner-occupation rate in the area is at 50%, the economically active outnumber the inactive by almost 2:1 and the area also has a low crime rate.  So it would appear that I do not buck the trend.

Isn’t it fascinating how the perception of a bit of easy money made on the property market has turned members of a previously productive, cultured, constructive social class into a shower of stuck-up bigots?

  25. Bemused

Thank you for the clarification.  I am afraid it was not “obvious” as your comment was a blanket prescription in terms of how area’s and residents were to be dealt as made explicit in the comment below:

“While we’re at it how about similarly demolishing the Markets, Donegall Pass, the Village, Sandy Row and all of the other anachronistic pockets of ‘working’ class vermin throughout the city.”
