“It just comes down to what glasses you are wearing”…
THE flat young earthers are back, as creationist Stephen Moore explains why he’d like any new Causeway centre to include ‘information’ on its ‘biblical’ origins. He’d also like his theories to be included in the Ulster Museum, to explain how dinosaurs walked the earth with humans. However, last night God came to me in a dream and told me that the Giant’s Causeway was in fact created by a legendary Irish hunter-warrior called Finn MacCool, and I am disappointed that this widely-held and obviously sincere view is merely considered a legend and not as seriously as this ‘volcanic activity’ humbug. Perhaps I should start a petition. Or maybe I have more sense.

I thought Finn McCool was a giant?
A man can respect a giant
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 03:34 PMWhy don’t we tell the kids that come to visit a bigger fairy story. That some how billions of years ago all of time, space, matter exploded in a fraction of a second from nothing and set off a process of “unimaginable intelligence” that it produced “machines” such as the human brain that are beyond the collective wisdom of all scientist, doctors for the last 6,000 years to replicate.
You would be surprised who would fall for such a story - there are gullible people everywhere that would pay good money to hear this. Try most of the rabid atheists on Slugger for a start. I am assuming a passionate Darwin Fundamentalist like Belfast Gonzo will be popping in to see his relatives at the Belfast Zoo this Christmas and comparing notes as to the origin of life.
All of this nonsense from tax payers money....
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 03:44 PMThe reason why these eejits get any coverage at all is beyond me… or maybe it’s a comic effort?
I created a lovely picture once in P3 - does that mean i’m the creator? I also dreamt i created the Giant’s Causeway, maybe i’m Fionn Mac Cumhail?

The missing link in that Belfast Telegraph story was referenced here - when I noted that mischievous question.
And was quoted here
“The stakes for the creationists are very high. The Giant’s Causeway attracts some 500,000 visitors a year and is Northern Ireland’s largest tourist attraction. Both for school children studying geography or geology it is a major element in field studies. Getting creationism into the new Causeway visitor centre, believed to cost around £20 million, will be a huge coup for the creationists. No wonder they are putting so much effort into it. Again, it is exactly the same game being played by fundamentalists in the United States with the Grand Canyon.”
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 03:46 PMOne other point to note for any journalist covering this, or similar, story
“The use of the word ‘theory’ can mislead those not familiar with science..”
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 03:52 PMLets ask Ulster’s pre-eminent and world recognised scientist, Prof Norman Nevin of QUB for an opinion.
Sorry, we cannot as he is a literal 6 Day Creationist.......why should experts like him not be able to formulate a scientifc account that is in keeping with the views of the majority of the taxpayers and ratepayers of Ulster? Instead the Darwin fascists have to “force” all of our vistors and schoolchildren to be brainwashed in an illiberal manner their pet theories.
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 04:04 PMAm I Rip Van Winkle?
Have I just woken up and is today actually April 1st?Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 04:07 PMI think you are Joe. Did you create the moon?
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 04:09 PMall this debate about darwinism and creationism gives me a pain in my coccyx !

I’m sure we can and I’m sure he has one but since his field is medical genetics, I’m struggling to see the particular relevance.
.......why should experts like him not be able to formulate a scientifc account that is in keeping with the views of the majority of the taxpayers and ratepayers of Ulster?
I was going to ask for some evidence for that statement, but that’s not really a concept you’ve got to grips with yet, is it?
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 04:22 PMah, theres nothing like ridiculing people who disagree with current scientific theory. im sure all your ancestors were gathered in a crowd pointing and laughing at anyone who thought the earth was round like a ball. ha ha, those nutters eh?
personally i believe the bible. it doesnt go into a lot of detail on many things, but thats were faith comes in.
as far as dating goes. i remember seeing a picture of a large stalictite (or mite, cant remember which is which) that had formed over a period of years from a water pipe. i think it was back in the early 20th century. sort of casts doubt on claims of millions or thousands of years to form things like marble arch caves.
if you cling to any scientific theory and refuse to consider it might be wrong, then YOU are the flat earther.
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 04:40 PM‘I was going to ask for some evidence for that statement, but that’s not really a concept you’ve got to grips with yet, is it?’
They believe it to be so, whay cant that be enough for you!
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 04:40 PMthat water pipe may have had very high levels of calcium carbonate, or other minerals which form stalictites, thus explaining its rather hasty formation. i hate my rational self :(
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 04:44 PMChrist. A severe case of limescale on a pipe is now analogous to the formation of a limestone landscape!
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 04:50 PMHang on Sam, are you saying God is wrong? It was definitely him in my dream. Have faith. All will become clear in the afterlife.
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 05:09 PM“...the bible doesn’t go into detail, thats were faith comes in...” I love it! Reminds me of Ricky Gervais in “Animals”. As for the water pipe, clear evidence that the marble arch caves were formed as a result of a leaky tap if ever I heard it.
I think the 500,000 visitors and the fat wallets they carry is the more likely explanation for the flat earthers pushing this one. I wonder if the same zealots also visit cancer wards and put up posters saying “MY GOD STANDS BY AND ALLOWS THIS TO HAPPEN”.
Somehow I doubt it.Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 05:21 PMTights come down....
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 05:36 PMYou obviously were more successful than me, Dewi.
Tights might come down.Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 05:51 PMStrictly hypothetical.
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 06:21 PMwhere do stockings come into this debate?
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 06:33 PMSomeone asked about stalactites and stalacmites (if that’s how its spelt) it’s the way to remember which one is which.
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 06:41 PMStalactights and stalacmights, snakebrain.
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 06:41 PM“I wonder if the same zealots also visit cancer wards and put up posters saying “MY GOD STANDS BY AND ALLOWS THIS TO HAPPEN”.
I wonder if people like you wander down the the bloodied rape victim and snarl “don’t worry, it is just his evolutionary drive” or to the father of a paedophile victim “bad luck, your baby happened to meet a man with wonky DNA.”
If you are going to try and raise the question of “evil,” you are going to have to be a little bit more sophisticated in your thinking mate. For instance, why is cancer “immoral?” or how to define “evil.”
Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 06:48 PMWhat about BRA, Dewi?
Litmus paper; Blue to Red, Acid. Hot stuff!Posted by on Nov 30, 2007 @ 06:48 PMwas just being facetious joe…
