7. Starhound, I was thinking the same meself. The last person I heard of going into digs was the brother back in the mid-80s in Khyaaavan, when he was ap[prenticing himself to An Post for three ha’pence a week plus matching shoes. He was in digs then, although he doesn’t like to talk about such traumatic experiences.

   Maybe a more interesting slugger topic would be the standard of student behaviour which is atrocious and it isnt just a few students either I speak from first hand experience.Wich is encouraged by a lot of their slum landlords.

11. Holyland behaviour - drunkeness, yobbishness, foul mouthed aggression, threatening behaviour, criminal damage to “ordinary” working peoples’ property, dumping of rubbish including sanitary items, failure to have any notion of how to behave in civilised society (except when mummy and daddy hove into view.  The behaviour straddles all levels of society and is classless (in all senses of the word).  When challenged about behaviour some have actually stated “this is what we are supposed to do”. Help!!!!!!

I suppose that could tie in with what I was geting at, namely that “students” are classified as a sub-section of the population to whom none of the normal rules apply, from behaviour to living standards. It’s not all of them though; the Holylands are a joke while Stranmillis, which has just as many students is relatively fine.

14. I feel for the people of the Holylands. I used to live next to an old dear down on Cadogan Street, she was tortured by turfers from Armagh who didn’t know how to behave in civilisation. I was tortured myself with the noise and casual vandalism. Bring back the good old days, when being caught out acting like a wanker by the locals carried a penalty of pain, that’s what I say.

We do not classify the students - their own behaviour speaks for itself.  We are not talking about “high jinks” but behaviour which is abysmal and inexcusable.  They could be placed in 5 star accommodation and would still behave like morons.  It is not just a few rotton apples but an epidemic of selfish, anti-social behaviour excused by woolly minded enablers.

16. They probably classify themselves. I know plenty of students who are fine, normal people, but there’s definitely a subset who fel an NUS card is a carte blanche to behave like dogs. It’s obviously a problem for those who live in the area, but it’s unfair to tar all students with the same brush. The Uni should do a bit more than occasionally threatening to get a bit cross. The old Oxbridge method of rustication might be particularly appropriate for some of the Armagh brigade.
