Getting over those dull names…
The Belfast Telegraph is doing its best to compensate for those undeniably dull names for the new Super Councils, but getting its readers to come up with something a bit more flavoursome.

The problem with names like East Down etc prompts the question, what about West Down.
They have to come up with complete names, and L/Derry is a prime example of why they went for the bland. Bland is better than controversial.

Which council is Dopey? Doc would obviously be Inner East!
The Sleeping Beauty is obviously the whole Island of Ireland, ready to be woken as a united whole! :)

Posted by on Nov 10, 2006 @ 03:44 PMThe problem with giving them names related to rivers, mountains, lakes etc is that (the Bann and Neagh excepted) these features are too localised to have relevance to all parts of the large areas these councils cover. For example, Lurker’s suggestion of Moyle for North East isn’t really relevant for Ballymena, Coleraine or Larne.
Anyway, I don’t mind these bland names, except Inner East, which is very odd.

What’s wrong with joining Fermanagh & Tyrone, reinstate Derry (or Londonderry or Sperrin or WTF you’re having yerself) & Armagh, split Down into North & South and Antrim the same. Belfast as is. Too simple or what?
That’s 8 councils with recognisable local boundaries and something that people can identify with. Instead we have the result of some geeks poring over maps trying to get some sort of sectarian divvy up.
They fukked the county boundaries up in Britain in the mid 70s and the new entities there still have feckall meaning to people who live within them.

Why not pool Ballymena, Larne, Banbridge, Portadown, Ahoghill, Cullybackey, Fivemiletown and all the other places that enjoy and welcome Orange Parades on July 12th, into one council, and call it Orangeville.
The remaining areas could be another council and called ProvoLand.
Should keep everyone happy.

Posted by on Nov 10, 2006 @ 09:08 PMWhy on earth would we want a sensible name for such a ramshackle bunch of nonsense? The Commissioner admitted that he couldn’t get a historian to suggest any sensible names that meant anything to the whole district for six of them.
Apart from Belfast, none of them is a community, none of them has an identity, none of them has a centre. The centre of ‘Inner East’ is probably not a mile from Donegall Square: could we have the City Hall as our Council HQ, please? Where else do Rathcoole and Drumbeg meet?
I like the seven dwarf idea. Inner East is clearly Dozy; not the people but the Ministers and civil servants who dreamed up the idea.

Good suggestion, but you’ve spelt Dál Riada incorrectly.
Most people seem to pronounce it Dál rà áda which is also incorrect.

The primary argument being presented against the 7 council model is reduced to ‘the names are boring’ across most sections of the media and comment.
The boundary maps came out this week and those rejecting the 7 council model decided the proposed names of Local Government areas are the main issue.
This name nonsense shows how lightweight the rejection of this more empowered model of local government is.
Where are the arguments against the proposed changes to the council system? I’ve only heard whinging about names since the report was issued.

On a slightly more serious note, Willowfield’s names sound quite easy and sensible.
Unfortunately, he obviously doesn’t work for the government.

Simple. You have an Armagh & West Down council.

You obviously need to open your eyes and ears a bit more then as there are currently inches of comment and column complaining about how these councils are too large to be meaningful, break up local ties and amount to a double sided sectarian gerrymander of council boundaries, which bear no relationship whatsoever to how people live, work and spend their free time.
