DUP man: “No Pope here…”
Interesting piece in the Irish News about Wallace Thompson, Nigel Dodds’ Special Advisor at Enterprise got himself into an hour long row with the callers on Joe Duffy’s Liveline phone in show when he called the Pope the Anti Christ… Not subtle, but that’s what it says in the Westminster Confession… It seems the ‘we’ refers to the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Protestant Society of which he is secretary, and not the DUP. It’s not a distinction that is that’s going down well with Sinn Fein, the SDLP and the Alliance.

Mick,
As a Post-Catholic (now a lapsed Jedi) I don’t see the problem. If that is what the guy believes then that is it.
The basis of all religons it seems to me that everyone but the ‘us/we’ is damned.
Ban / proscribe / force underground this belief and you ban / proscribe / force underground religon itself.

Shared future?Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 12:41 PM“If the Republic is prepared to welcome a visit from the Queen, then its incumbent the North does the same with a state visit from the Pope. ”
Ballocks. What the Republic does is up to them. I couldn’t give a toss whether or not the Pope comes to Northern Ireland or not. If he wants to come, as he’s the head of the single largest church here, I won’t object, but “incumbent”? Because of a royal visit to the Republic? Away and chase yourself. And if any of our ministers object to being part of it on religious grounds, so be it (though that shouldn’t affect those who do want to take part).
Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 12:47 PMIf the Pope is the Anti-Christ then there have certainly been a lot of Anti-Christs!
I thought there was only going to be one.
Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 12:49 PMThompson must be wondering what he has done to God to be put on an island where 4 in 5 are followers of the anti-Christ.
Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 12:54 PMWho’s Joe Duffy?
Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 12:58 PMThe scariest thing is that Thompson was a senior civil servant in the NIO.
I wonder did he let his beliefs cloud his decision-making?
Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 12:58 PMNot subtle, but that’s what it says in the Westminster Confession
So it must be true!
Clearly Wallace Thompson (presumably he has brothers called Baxter and Crawford) is no fool. He knows he can get away with spouting nonsensical bile about Catholics that he couldn’t get away with saying about Jews, for example, and all disguised under the family-friendly cloak of ‘Theological Differences’.
However, Catholics love Jesus too and Wallace hates them (Correction: loves them but hates their beliefs). According to his beloved bible, the Jews crucified his Saviour, but he has no problem with them. Where’s the logic in that?
Of course, we can only speculate what his views on Muslims are but he’s hardly going to get himself embroiled in a row with Islam, where his comments on a radio phone in can be replayed amid increasing hysteria and the issuing of Fatwas throughout the Islamic world. No, far better to limit yourself to Catholicism - less fuss that way. As I said, he’s not stupid. Though he’s clearly a coward.Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 12:59 PMpacman,
It says he worked in the Dept of Education previously..... do you even bother to read?Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 01:00 PMYes I do what:

NIO and Dept of Education. Don’t you bother?

I wonder if this counts as sectarianism?
If someone had said that Seamus Flynn presumably has brothers called Sean and Aloysius, would that indicate sectarianism?
If someone had said that Winston Taylor presumably has brothers called Nelson and Gladstone, would that indicate racism?
etc., etc.
I’m not sure, but Dec’s unnecessary aside sticks out from the page.
Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 01:07 PMNo Pope, no Irish Language Broadcast Fund, what else do we have to thank the DUP colluders in chief, SF, for?
Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 01:08 PMWho’s Joe Duffy?
Posted by willowfield on Jan 23, 2008 @ 12:58 PM
Joe Duffy is an over paid socialist, jeez man don’t you watch Podge and Rodge on RTE?
Wallace Thompson (what is it with DUPs having first names that sound like surnames?) has the perfect right to his own views, however I also have the right to call him a knuckledragging biggot who never entertained an original thought in his miserable existance. With guys like this “advising” the country’s leaders who needs visits from Phred Phelps to visit.
Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 01:10 PMThis same guy is also having a row with the Dean of the COI cathedral in Dublin over the selling of rosary beads.
He needs to get a life.Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 01:18 PMRosary beads link to BT.

Pounder
You’re a sectarian bigot too! Let’s form a club.
We may have to rename it as the Sectarian Bigot/Racist club though. I’ll let you know as soon as I find out who Winston Taylor is and on what basis expletive is implying he’s black.

Try to visualise a piss-stained, chronically drunk tramp haranguing passers-by with these words and you’ll discern their true value.
Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 01:27 PMI wonder if First Minister Paisley will shake hands with his anti-christ - Jesus wept. Thank God i’m an antheist! ;)
Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 01:28 PMMay the Lord God Bless your soul Wallace Thompson.
Isn’t it about time someone stood up to these devil worshipping cretins. Slowly, they are trying to deny Ulster its Christian values, but they didn’t account for stalwarts of Christendom such as your good self to stall their blind march towards lawlessness.
May God save the Good Queen Elizabeth II
Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 01:30 PMRobert Bingham,
You’re funny.
“Trying to deny Ulster it’s Christian values”
I didn’t know a piece of land could have religious beliefs!
Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 01:36 PMDo we still have free speech in this country or not? As Mr Thompson has said, his point of view is set out in the confessions of the 2 largest Protestant denomination. If Dec, pacman or Dolores Kelly don’t like it, they are equally entitled to their opinion. However, it would be nice if people like Pounder would have a higher standard standard of theological critique than petty abusive invective.
And for what it’s worth, I agree with Mr Thompson about the Pope being the Antichrist, but I don’t think that makes me a bad person.
Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 01:38 PMDuh!!!
Surely it is a basic premise of the concept of belief (should it be political or religious) that you accept and support a number of principles. It therefore follows that anything that is opposed to those principles, the believer should be opposed to.
Since when did being opposed to something make a person a bigot?
It seems that the liberal fascists on this site think that one must be opposed to nothing and believe in nothing. I am opposed to the concepts of socialism - does that make me a bigot? I am opposed to the nonsense of scientology - does that make me a bigot? Sectarian? Of course not.
Grow up.

Don’t humour him. Willowfield knows fine well who Duffy is. The question he posed was merely an attempt to show everyone that he is so unsullied that not even RTE broadcasts ever pass his pure unionist ears.
Posted by on Jan 23, 2008 @ 01:39 PMPrince Charles has made it known that he wants Fidei Defensor ammended to be defender of <i>all</a> faiths. What will happen then?
