Just getting early word that Denis Donaldson has been shot dead… Hain has called it ‘this barbaric act...” Pete has more above.

  1. Just heard. Well can’t say I am surprised. Question is who shot him?  Was it the PIRA? If so is it a breach of the ceasefire?

  2. I posted a few minutes back on a thread about oil of all things about this. Certainly he has been shot dead but does that mean suicide or someone went and did it?

Was the Sunday World article about him and his bolthole?

Was there a danger he was going to reveal something?

And (this I can barely wait to see) is anyone on this forum going to possibly excuse in some way him being shot if it wasn’t suicide?

  3. Oh one thing..Unionist Parties hold fire and wait before you point the finger.  Thats all I’m saying

    Posted by  on Apr 04, 2006 @ 05:36 PM
  4. was it the PIRA??

Cant you wait until the facts come in before jumping the gun on who may have done it?

    Maybe it was MI5.

  5. Whilst its too early to tell (doesn’t stop the usual speculation on breaches of ceasefire), considering the BBC breaking news refers to ‘Government sources’ this hints at suicide. But as I said, it is too early to tell.

  6. Hmmm… keep an eye on Blair’s plans for Thursday…

    Posted by  on Apr 04, 2006 @ 05:40 PM
  7. I may be paranoid but could it be than donaldson has secrets that powerful people would rather the public not know.

This is what happened william strobie and I am sure that like him , donaldson has secrets that the government would rather not be told.

  8. No point in speculating until further details are revealed. Taoiseach Ahern has described it as a “brutal murder” though…

  9. It’s certainly a spanner in the works…

    Posted by  on Apr 04, 2006 @ 05:45 PM
  10. It wont matter who shot him, the DUP will claim its PIRA no matter what and then trot out the usual story .... Unionists don’t feel safe, no ceasefire, unreconstructed terrorists .... BLAH ... BLAH ... BLAH........

The sad fact is that this mans death would be benifical to many people on many fronts, and few of his former comrades will morn his passing.

  11. Peter Hain has said he is “appalled at the barbaric act” and Gerry Adams has condemned it, which points towards a murder…

    Posted by El Matador @ ElBlogador.com on Apr 04, 2006 @ 05:47 PM
  12. Henry McDonald has suggested that the gunshot wound may be self-inflcited.

    Posted by  on Apr 04, 2006 @ 05:48 PM
  13. if the cap fits…

The rah certainly shot people for a lot less than this. According to “The Secret History of the IRA” the leadership had my cousin killed for shooting his mouth of in a bar in the company of other volunteers.

    Pour encourager les autres, apparently.

Well les autres will be pretty encouraged tonight.

  14. Permatan called it a barbaric, its all a bit strong isn’t it. Thus we are left with who done it and why.

Cormac MI5/IRA they are closely linked ya know....

I would hope its fair to ask did the Sunday World do something irresponsible because its about all we do know for certain and we also had a heated topic (pulled by the looks of it) about the press responsibility in its reporting earlier.  And screw it this is a forum so we need something to go with in the absence of a who done it.

  15. Why dont we save ourselves hours of wasted time on this thread. Unionists will blame PIRA. Republicans will blame MI5/ securocrats. Realisation of the truth will come much later.

    Posted by  on Apr 04, 2006 @ 05:51 PM
  16. Heck,

Someone will have to take the rap though and it isn’t going to be MI5 is it even if they did play a hand

    Posted by  on Apr 04, 2006 @ 05:54 PM
  17. Tim-Pat Coogan has just come off with the notion that (anti-Agreement) Unionists may have done it, before signing-off his Sky News contribution by (unknowingly) being heard asking for the “usual token of appreciation” (for his time).

A bit of lunatic light relief from the veteran in the face of a man’s death.

    Posted by  on Apr 04, 2006 @ 05:55 PM
  18. Good forward preces SB. It’s thought there was some early confusion because Donaldson used to shoot for recreation.

    Posted by  on Apr 04, 2006 @ 05:55 PM
  19. The bottom line is a man is dead. RIP Dennis.

  20. is this a case of collusion?
Who in Sinn Fein colluded with their paramilitary wing to have this guy killed?

    Posted by  on Apr 04, 2006 @ 06:00 PM
  21. Adasms was speaking on BBC. Wouldn’t speculate but said DD was a brit agent and worked for the brits.

No speculation who Adams thinks did it.

While Adams blames the Brits, Paisley was on RTE saying no one hated him like SF?IRA pointed to them for motivation.

    Wait for the blame game.

  22. However Denis Donaldson died, it is the direct consequence of Britain’s intelligence establishment outing him, whether he committed suicide, was shot by disgrunted Provisionals or securocrats on either side of the border.  It is a shocking example of just how self-serving Britain had become.

The only similar killing was the one of Gerard Devlin after the Brits outed Freddie Scappaticci as ‘Stakeknife’, and the Notarantonios took the greatest offence to Gerard calling Francisco Notarantonio a BA tout on March 16, 2003 - an accusation for which they killed him back in February when he repeated it.

The Brits,in short, have gone ape-shit, and someone should bring them to heel.

  23. The provos have issued a statement saying they didn’t do it. Old P. O’Neill was very quick off the mark on that one…

    Posted by El Matador @ ElBlogador.com on Apr 04, 2006 @ 06:08 PM
  24. Apparently they cut his hands off. Again, just rumour coming through.

    Posted by El Matador @ ElBlogador.com on Apr 04, 2006 @ 06:12 PM
  25. The NIO is putting the ‘unsanctioned’ killing theory either by Provos or a breakaway republican faction.

Assuming it isnt suicide, which all public reaction says it isn’t, expect this to be official currency at government level. Don’t necessarily expect thew Garda to follow though.
