Cathedral Quarter: In search of new narratives…
Just a quick reminder of the Out to Lunch discussion at the Black Box is taking place tomorrow. It’s the topic of the discussion that makes it compelling as much as the panel: Glenn Patterson and Malachi O’Doherty, chaired by writer June Caldwell. They will seek to answer a question that many beyond the literary world are also seeking to answer (not least us here on Slugger): what are the new narratives that are emerging, socially, culturally and politically. Are we in for a period of literary aphasia? Or does it simply mean that we have to endure the pain of getting out of the often comfortable rut of intercommunal tensions and seek out stories of the new Northern Irish, or the growing disconnect with communal identity amongst the middle class. What’s new about writers writing about their “disconnect from communal identity”. James Joyce, John Hewitt, Robert McLiam Wilson, Brian Keenan…on and on and on
The problem comes when we’re all so postmodern that there’s no communal identity to disconnect from.
But then we can all stop reading and play Wii.
