And back to Bulgaria..?

There are some interesting details emerging from the Bulgarian newspaper, 24 часа (24 Hours Daily). The first of a three part report published in tomorrow’s edition claims that two Irishmen set up companies in Bulgaria last January. The first, they say, (called AM) belongs to an Aidan Murphy: the second (BM) owned by a Steven Francis Murphy. Both companies were registered in the town of Bourgas on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, near to where Aidan Murphy had bought land. So far, so insignificant. However, both men have addresses in Ireland at Ballybinaby, Co Louth. The paper believes, but cannot confirm, that they are nephews of Thomas “Slab” Murphy.

At this stage, the story is just an interesting detail, rather than newsworthy in its own right. As yet, the paper has no proof that the men are actually connected to Murphy in the way they suggest. And there is also no evidence of wrongdoing on the part of either company. Accordingly, it would be wise not to jump to premature conclusions.

Should a connection be made, however, things could get very interesting. Not least since one of Murphy’s nephews, Ronan Kirk, who sat as a director of Ace Oils Ltd, was convicted for his role in fuel smuggling in 2005.  And of course there was that abandoned land deal in Bulgaria, back in 2004.

Slugger understands that the next instalment of the story is due out on Thursday. We may have to wait until then to learn if this story really is a story after all.

  1. Just to put my paranoid mind at rest, Mick, how in the name of Christ did you find out about this? I assume you don’t read Bulgarian.

  2. So far as I know, nothing untoward SRR. But I’m also not about to reveal my source. ;-)

  3. err, find out about what, exactly?

There’s nothing like the great tradition of investigative journalism and this is nothing like...etc.,etc.

I can almost smell your desperation, Mic- bit sad really.

  4. Desperation?

It’s an interesting story, Mick is right to blog it. And hasn’t he clearly stated that so far it’s a side detail with little substance as yet?

Save yer gurning till you have something to gurn about.

    (That would be Thursday, apparently)

  5. another sad attempt at baseless accusations

  6. So at this point there is no proven link to anything illegal by anybody and no proven blood link of anyone to anybody else but lets stick it on the net anyway.
Is this news? Mick, your handlers must be very proud of you..

  7. Mick that wouldn’t even make it into the Sue section in the Sunday Times, or would it ? It looks very like it should have. ( Source Protection & all that)

  9. Guys,

No time for cut and thrust on this, but can I just repeat that, IMHO, this is not a story and there is no case for any of the guys named above to answer. And there still may not be after Thursday. There are no concrete conclusions to b drawn from what is published so far.

But it is all now in the public domain, and I can’t see any good reason for ‘spiking’ it.

  10. Mick,

This info is worthy of blogging and debate.

This info is well known to both Govts and many other journalist. But just like the CAB case against slab has been placed on the back burner this will be filed away until such time as a gentle prod and a reminder is needed for certain Republican criminals to play the HMG line .

Call it a peace dividend for the chosen few.LOL

  11. And couldn’t it just be a nice diversion to get the public’s eye off the important proceedings this week of the Mahon inquiry where it deals with Manchester Murphy’s dealings with Bertie Ahern - with Tom Gilmartin scheduled to appear every day - over all that money regarding the Quarryvale property back in the 1990s?

  17. In case you have been lost in Bulgaria on your holiday, looking for spare, cheap real estate, here is what is really happening this week at Dublin Castle:

  18. Good one Mick- as always, the response from certain quarters is as good a way as any to judge whether you should have blogged it.

  19. ‘Sounds funny that people are jumping to defend this “non-story”!  “IF” Slabs dirty money has filtered through to his nephews..., and “IF” such wealth is the product of the treasonous Provo campaign… who would really be surprised?  Gerry’s Donegal Berghof is well documented and I’m sure there are many other “nephews” with similar capital producing investments.  The Provos held ireland to ransom and this was the price a majority of Irish Nationalists/Republicans have agreed to pay.

  20. Seems that we shall have to settle on Thursday for revelations about what the Murphys have done in Bulgaria afterall, as Bertie’s financial dealings (money laundering?) has become so contested that his appearance before the Mahon inquiry has been put off until September:
