Aistriúchán le teacht ar ‘Baile Átha Cliath’
Dar leis an Lá Nua, tá deireadh le teacht leis an seoladh poist Gaeilge ‘Baile Átha Cliath’. Duir urlabhraí An Post go raibh an cinneadh seo deanta acú mar go bhfuil “go leor inimirceach ag obair linn agus ní bheadh siad in ann Gaeilge a léamh. Lena chois sin, tá ár gcuid meaisíní curtha in oiriúint chun an post a shórtáil i mBéarla.” And in English. Tá muid an buioch de ‘Soupy’ ar fad don dhá nascanna…

Snamhnasach agus lag.
Cheannaigh siad trealamh nua - Béarla amhåin a léann sé, ansin cuireann siad an milleån ar inimircigh bochta.
Ach is cinnte liomsa nach bhfuil Gaeil na tĂre seo dul glacadh leis seo.

Cur an milleĂĄn ar na h-imircĂ. Agus is dĂłigh liom nach bhfuil Caerdydd ceadaithe nĂos mĂł i gCymru ag Post Brenhinol ar an chĂșis cĂ©anna.
In Ă©adan dlĂ na tĂre gan trĂĄcht ar an nĂĄire.

Posted by on May 11, 2007 @ 02:55 PMBaile Atha Cliath no Dubh Linn? Is fearr liom Dubh Linn.
Posted by on May 11, 2007 @ 08:07 PMBlackpool? Really?
Posted by on May 11, 2007 @ 08:22 PMTĂĄ failte romhat.
Posted by on May 11, 2007 @ 09:38 PMNo I’m serious Mick. Dublin is derived from Dubh Linn just as Belfast is derived from Beal Feirste. I would not like my native city to be known as Ballyattley (from Baile Atha Cliath)!
(Apologies for using the Queen’s English!!)Posted by on May 11, 2007 @ 11:53 PMDuibhlinn and Baile Ătha Cliath were originally different places, they simply grew into each other, Dubliners have always used Duibhlinn > Dublin but Irish speakers outside of the century, have always used Baile Ătha Cliath.
To the best of my recollection Baile Ătha Cliath was somewhat to the north of Duibhlinn but I may be wrong.

Posted by on May 12, 2007 @ 08:02 PMI recall hearing that Dubh Linn - yep Black Pool - was the spot where the Poddle (one of Dublin’s 9 rivers) enters the Liffey, close to the Viking’s Wood Quay.
