A ‘Starry Plough’ tattoo: well, who knew?
A reader sends in this snippet from one of a plethora of myth busting blog posts on the case of Sarah Palin. “Yes, it appears that she has a Big Dipper tattooed on her ankle. She lost a bet.” Ahem, Big Dipper = Starry Plough. Surely Máirtín should be told!
Adds: It’s something to do with this flag, rather than that flag.

Personally, I think it should be illegal for any female over UK dress size 12 to wear a bikini, but there you go…

Of course it isn’t okay to manipulate stereotypes that impact negatively on an enormous number of people, and the difference is that Republicans actually play fair and Democrats are just a bunch of nasty hypocrites who will use any angle to gain votes no matter how unethical or destructive it is to others. This smear camapign against Palin is going to backfire on them, and badly.

As the INLA vowed to shoot those who engage in anti-social behaviour within their communities recently. Maybe Palin is really trying to secure thos rifle using, god fearing rednecks who unbelievably have a say in who should be the most powerful figure in the world. The opportunity to shoot those who break the law, surely thats a vote winner in a few states.

What’s this got to do with Northern Ireland?
Considering the plethora of posts on Palin and this election may I timidly suggest that, while the more frivolous posts provide light relief from weightier matters elsewhere, there should be at least a few placed in the context of the emerald island to the east of the USA.
If I may be so bold as to offer a loose definition of what that relevance might be, let’s say domestic matters in the USA that have an effect on both parts of the island and present and future foreign policy of the USA.
For instance, how do the nationalization of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and the lumbering of the American taxpayer with $5.3 trillion in new debt affect its economy and by extension the economies across the water? What type of system is being created? Should we now refer to Comrade Bob from Boston?

And what about foreign policy? Many commentators here have argued for one candidate over the other, but is it not the case that whoever is elected there will be more of this?

And if that is the case, does it not follow that those who are arguing for these candidates are willing accomplices in incidents like the above?
And yet these are the same commentators that have no problem expressing moral outrage on incidents located closer to home.
The level of cognitive dissonance displayed by some commentators is astounding.
