On The Doors: UUP & SDLP Manifestos plus the UTV Debate

Week Two of the On The Doors podcast with Irish News political correspondent, John Manley and former NUS-USI President, Adrianne Peltz.

This week we discussed the launch of the UUP and SDLP manifestos as well as, the impact of the UTV debate.

  • Cavehill

Adrienne in these videos is far too partisan and apologetic for the SDLP. Are we going to have DUP, SF, UUP, and Alliance partisans in the coming weeks?

  • Jag

Right, deffo on topic here! Does anyone know when the Shinners will launch their manifesto for the Assembly elections. Why are they the last of the major parties out the gate? Is someone in SF HQ double-checking there’s no guff about dedicated air corridors for squadrons of economic policy flying pigs?

  • Declan Doyle

LOL, Their Ard Fheis is this weekend so I would imagine it will pop up then maybe.

  • Kevin Breslin

I’m not aware of Adrianne Peltz having any party affiliation with the SDLP. She’s entitled to express her own interpretation of the manifestos and debate as a commentator.

  • chrisjones2

“On the doors” ????? The Manifestos? In the bins surely

  • chrisjones2

“Does anyone know when the Shinners will launch their manifesto for the Assembly elections”

Does it matter? They could advocate the legalisation of bank robbery and prostitution, abolition of paedophilia as an offence, increasing the rates by 20% and spending £1 bn on locating alien life on other planets using a Roberts Radio based in Newry and they would still be elected as the 2nd biggest party

  • Cavehill

Oh come on Kevin, she’s a member of the SDLP and even alluded to that in this video.

  • Jag

I would argue with you Chris about “2nd biggest party”, but the evidence on the ground is the Shinners will not be making the Big Push with this election, and for the time being, they’re okay with being 2nd biggest. That’s based on observation in south Down and Armagh – the Shinners are certainly not throwing the kitchen sink at this one.

  • Kevin Breslin

Well I’m only saying that because media personalities siding at times with a party often infers they are either members or supporters e.g. Chris Donnelly often gets taken for being a Sinn Féin supporter, David McCann and Fianna Fáil etc.

  • Cavehill

Go on to her Twitter, she frequently mentions that she is a member of the SDLP.

  • Granni Trixie

Then surely all that has to happen is for her post to let us know that is where she is coming from? As with Chris.

  • Kevin Breslin

Well I wasn’t aware of that.

  • mickfealty

27th, I think. Just so no one gets time to worry about whether it is costed or not.

  • mickfealty

    Witch trial anyone?

  • Lionel Hutz

I’m pretty sure that on the first part of this series, she said something about her affiliation.

  • Nevin

“Chris Donnelly often gets taken for being a Sinn Féin supporter”

Would that be this Chris Donnelly?

“Presbyterian Minister Rev Lesley Carroll & republican blogger & commentator Chris Donnelly on the need for joint leadership” .. The Nolan Show.

  • Msiegnaro

The SDLPs was not exactly costed either.

  • Nevin
  • Urban Elder

Hope you plan on complaining about Jude Collins’ media appearances as well. I find Adrienne a refreshing young and very capable commentator. She declares party affiliation (which is more than most) so I see no issue.

  • mickfealty

My point exactly. No one’s is. Which makes it a false argument if it only applies to some manifestos and not others.

  • Kevin Breslin

And what does photographic evidence prove? 😀

  • Kevin Breslin

He was a member once, does that prove he is now?

  • Sir Rantsalot

I’m guessing that if you reread any party’s last manifesto, it will be more or less the same as the 2016 one.

  • Nevin

It just illustrates that she’s out canvassing for the SDLP, Kevin. She’s also been out on the stomp with Claire Hanna, if I interpret her tweets correctly.

Six minutes in to that first Irish News video she says she’s a member of the SDLP and a member of the UK Labour Party. Perhaps she’ll now do some lobbying for LPNI.

  • Kevin Breslin

There really is no rules against dual membership as things stand in the status quo. It’s not by any means a unique case, I was looking up who Lib Dems NI spokesperson was and it turns out to be someone who is a member of the Alliance Party too.

  • Nevin

Kevin, I think, by now, you should realise that Adi does indeed have an affiliation with the SDLP.

  • Kevin Breslin

Okay, well it turns out that I have actually learned something new from this forum.

Lap it up because you’ll never, ever see those words ever, ever again on this forum from anyone else ever, ever, ever again.

  • Nevin

I think I’ll leave lapping up to the kittens!
