“If I’m to be Taoiseach… I need a little bit of Naughten in my life, a little bit of Finian by my side…”

Oh yes there was another poll out this evening, but if you are in any way puzzled by what’s happening in the south tonight, you could do worse than take it from satirical impressionist Oliver Callan…

And on the limitations of ‘oppositionism’, there is also this…

Michigan why does you N&A blog tell us when the next ae16 profile will be like the previous ones did?

The betting companies appear convinced that FG will now do a minority government deal with Labour and Independents, which will mean that at the next nomination of a Taoiseach (not in the Dail schedule for this coming week), Enda will have 58 seats. With 44 FFers abstaining, that means a max of 56 (158-58-44) can oppose Enda’s nomination, and Enda will become the new Taoiseach by a whisker of 2TDs. Labour has 6 TDs, the Independent Alliance has 4.

I just can’t see this working. There won’t be a written agreement and if there is, it won’t be worth the paper it’s written on, and won’t be legally enforceable, and if you think you can embarrass Irish politicians with the notion of honour, or giving your word, you’d be very much mistaken. FF may be happy to see the circus operate for a couple of months, all the while sniping from the Opposition and looking as statesmanlike as they can, and then, the inevitable banana skin turns up, and FF pull the plug along with SF, Soc Dems and several Indies, and in the second general election, FF leapfrogs FG (as it appears to be doing in the polls) and FF is then in the driving seat for any grand coalition.

Time for a new election. People really need to make their minds up ….and despite what we are all told there is no free lunch

    It’s coming tomorrow, east Belfast.

    Great satire, especially ‘Opposition Anonymous’.

The conversations are still being had with next Wednesday’s scheduled vote cancelled, this gives them more time to pull something together. I wouldn’t read too much into the Sunday Times poll, it is pretty irrelevant at this stage. If FG can muster the support of Lab and some independents – FF will come under huge pressure to not play silly beggars in the house. Banana skins can hurt all who slip on them, incl FF.
