How did you score the candidates on last night’s #EP14 debate…

So, the UTV debate last night. If you haven’t watch it, do. It’s not pleasant, but it’s very instructive on the shockingly poor quality of the main party candidates (see Ronan Mullen from the RTE PrimeTime debate, h/t Suzanne, for comparison).

The format is not kind to any one wanting to push out anything more than a populist soundbite.

Will it make any difference? Sadly, I doubt it. Electorates across Europe are more likely to settle local and national scores rather than looking at the record of any of the sitting members.

So how did you score it?

Allister clearly on top of the brief..Martina Anderson despite annoying voice has practised her lines well; Diane Dodds has improved following car crash first election; Jim Nicholson looks really tired. Anna Lo was not a good pick for Alliance. Alex performed well last night.

  • Mc Slaggart

    Newman

“Allister clearly on top of the brief.”

Does he honestly think that England would send much of the money saved from getting out of the EU to Northern Ireland farmers?

    First debate:
    1 Attwood, 2 Allister, 3=Nicholson, Lo, 4=Anderson, Dodds

It’s as well the DUP and SF barely need to lift a finger to get elected.

Second debate: McKenzie and Brown the better performers. Reilly was woeful and the conservative could have been described as passive aggressive. Him and Reilly arguing over the top of Tina was down right rude.

    Oh, and Shappiro was horrendous.

McS, stick to the subject or…

  • Outsider

Does Allister have any chance despite being the best candidate?

  • Charles_Gould

    I go with this:

    1 Attwood, 2Nicholson, 3 Allister, 4. Dodds 5=Anderson, Lo,

  • Charles_Gould

    Outsider

Actually I don’t think Allister can win, but I think he will do better than most commentators on here have predicted on our prediction thread.

  • Charles_Gould

On tonights debate, Alex Attwood again seems to come out as the best candidate overall.

  • Outsider

    Charles_Gould,

On here he is polling poorly at 8%, it’s disappointing as he he much better than Dodds or Nicolson whom I feel this is one election too many.

  • Charles_Gould

Outsider – I could see him doing well. I think the UUP voters will stick with Jim Nicholson but I could see some DUP people going for Allister as their number 1 – he seems just that bit stronger than D Dodds.

  • Outsider

I agree that Dodds is a lightweight but in comparison to last term will he exceed 66000 votes?

  • Charles_Gould

    Outsider

    Its very hard to say.

One theory is that he will do worse as he didn’t do well in the last Assembly elections.

Another theory says he will do well because a lot of people have liked his work in the assembly.

I tend to think he will not do quite as well as last time but he will not do very much worse.

Anna lo hasn’t a notion about farming and it shows. Noel’s a much better host tonight.

  • Charles_Gould

Martina Anderson – seems to be all at sea in tonight’s debate.

  • Charles_Gould

In terms of stature, labour values, and overall grasp of the issues, Alex Attwood far outshines Martina Anderson. He has grown in sureness of touch in this campaign.

  • Outsider

So Martina “All at Sea” Anderson, Jim “Dreary” Nicholson and Diane “competent” Dodds are all going to get elected over vastly superior candidates?

  • Zig70

Any nationalist who doesn’t give Alex a transfer at 2 at least, is being very shortsighted. There is a big opportunity here to start to raise people expectations. He did okay.

  • Outsider

Easy Niall the mask is slipping.

  • boondock

I take it Niall Alex Attwood wont be getting your number 2

  • socaire

Charles, I don’t think you have come to grips with the way this thing works. The person that the people vote for, who gets the most votes wins. Just because you don’t know how the ‘submit’ button works, doesn’t mean that Saint Alex will get elected even though he ‘obviously’ deserves to. He has hitched – or rather cannot unhitch – from the Slowly Dying party and is doomed to ever decreasing circles. Anyway, I know what donkey my flag is on.

  • Outsider

Socaire surely people are allowed to have a view different from yourself that is not pro Sinn Fein.

  • socaire

Be my guest, Outsider. That’s what it is all about. You pick the candidate you like best or the one nearest your philosophy and vote for it. If no-one appeals then don’t vote. I think that if I was a member of the British community here that I would vote for Allister – but I’m not. I hope you don’t misread my utter dislike and contempt for the Slowly Dying party as love for Provisional Sinn Féin.

  • Outsider

I agree with you on Allister but it seems Unionist would prefer to vote in lesser candidates for reasons unknown.

  • Mc Slaggart

    @ Mick
“The shockingly poor quality of the main party candidates”

How does asking questions on Allisters claims of “that England would send much of the money saved from getting out of the EU to Northern Ireland farmers?” “not stick to the subject”

It should be noted that the exact same point was made in last night TV debate by more than one of his opponents.

  • Taoiseach

Atwood would be votable if he didn’t support same sex marriage.

  • Mc Slaggart

    Taoiseach

“Atwood would be votable if he didn’t support same sex marriage.”

I cannot have the man but I will end up voting for him due to agreeing with a lot of his policy’s.

Their is not sufficient Love in the world that one should stand in the way of people expressing their own love.

  • Taoiseach

Do you support adultery, Mc Slaggart? Should politicians be promoting that too?

  • Mc Slaggart

    Taoiseach

“Do you support adultery, Mc Slaggart? ”

I do my best not to make judgements on other people.

“Judge not, that ye be not judged.

For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?”

    King james version

  • Taoiseach

“I do my best not to make judgements on other people.”

So you won’t actually be voting? And you don’t believe in the rule of law, courts, a criminal code. You’re an anarchist?

  • Mc Slaggart

    @ Taoiseach

I think you will find the law makes decisions on people actions not on who they are.

  • Taoiseach

Indeed, actions, like adultery and sodomy.
