#Heffernan takes gold in Moscow

Rob Heffernan is now world champion in the 50km walk, taking the title by some distance at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow. Heffernan came fourth in last years epic Olympic 50km final (which, for me, was a stand out moment) in a time two seconds faster than his winning time in Moscow. Of all track disciplines, the 50km walk is easily one of, if not the, most physically brutal and carries the risk of a disqualification on receipt of three yellow cards (Heffernan collected two and had to complete the race with the ever present risk of a third and disqualification).

Heffernan becomes only the third Irish winner of gold at the World Championships, after Eamon Coughlan and Sonia O’Sullivan. Exalted company, but well deserved, maith thú Rob.

I know I shouldn’t be elated, given the depressing news from Egypt, etc, but it’s a major individual athletic achievement. Toradh iontach go deimhin.

    Excellent news.
The Walks are very much the “cinderella” events in Track-Field-Road.
Only taken serjiously when there are medals.
The Walking events have ben targetted by AAI for a decade or more.
Olive Loughnane and Rob Heffernan at the very forefront of that.
    Congratulations to him.

Notable that Irish success has only ever come in distance events. Does that suggest anything about the physical characteristics of Irish people.
Perhaps as the immigrant polulation matures we may yet see a competitive sprinter wearing an Irish vest.

It’s really great to have a “feel good” thread.
    Well done Rob Heffernan.

Oh, and well done to the Northern Ireland soccer team tonight too.

Northern Irish soccer players managed to sprint very well this evening and managed to outsprint the Russians as they defeated them by a great goal by Martin Patterson .
I guess Martin O’Neill will get to keep his job for a while yet ;)

    And well done Rob Heffernan

Now theres two feel goods Joe eh :)
