And, Slugger is back…

Mon 11 February 2013, 8:39pm

Sorry for the outage… It was longer than we might hoped. The database started unravelling on Thursday and by Friday morning it was completely gone. We worked on Friday, but ran out of road/time to get it sorted in time for the weekend. Simon has been working on it all day to get back in working order.

What really need is a package that has the deep maintence compris. That’s expensive though, and easily outruns the small budget Slugger earns through advertising… So in the week or two, I’ll be looking at ways we can bump that up to cover the more expensive package…

In the meantime, welcome back… and in celebration of our one minute of fame from Thursday, when Slugger made a fleeting appearance on the BBC2 quiz programme, Eggheads…

Just think this website could have been called Kipper O’Malley. A lost opportunity?

I actually thought you’d gone and done the decent thing, pulled the plug and gone the way of the current Pope…

As long as the old cerebral database doesn’t start unravelling everything is hunky dory.

I’m curious about exactly what the problem with the database was. In my naive view I’d have thought if corruption crept in it would be a case of restoring it from a dump. A couple of hours tops ?

Mick, good to see it back up, and that was a great wee plug !

Have noticed a few site playing up lately, and down for maintenance.

On your walks around the country, over the last few days, you may have noticed strange abstracted-looking persons gibbering helplessly to themselves.

But now we’re all back in business. Well done, Mick. The world is indeed spinning on its axis once again, so we can all stop watching UFOTV.

Naw, there was no problem, you know, I don’t really need this site, I can stop at any time, just need to drop in every so often, no, not need, no I don’t need, it, I just like the taste of it every now and again, it’s not like I can’t stop, I’m just a sociable user, that’s all, oh jesus mary and joseph that was a long weekend, thank god the site’s back, whew, ah yes, that’s it, ooh yeah.

Yeah quite right CS. But two things. That works if you have an houses tech team. Two, nearly eleven years of dynamic pages took about eight hours to restore db and files.

PS, now would be a good time to say a public thank you to those generous souls who put their hand in their pockets and have contributed to the continuation of the site.

I hope we are able to continue repaying your faith in Slugger’s public value.

What on earth are you running this site on? Someones PC in their spare room? In my company we have several sites hosted in 3rd party companies. There is never any down time. If you are paying for a service there should be redundancy in the server infrastructure so that the web site is never down.
If you are paying for a service and it is down for several days you should immediately change to a different provider.Your current provider is not worth the money.

  20. Well, I’m glad that the permanent axe job I had envisaged, engineered by the bankers and their allies in the Dáil and Stormont in the wake of those threads on the Anglo Irish Bank fiasco, was just in my imagination……..

    For the time being anyway.

ForkHandles, I was about to say the same thing but then I realized that this must be literally a shoestring operation. The rates at which IT people who know what they are talking about are hired out at would put a legal aid barrister to shame.

Database corruption is certainly a surprise as there are a lot of websites much bigger than Slugger using OSS DBs such as MySQL or Postgres. On the other hand, if a cheap disk array exposed corruption to the DB that would explain it. Modern filesystems with end to end checksumming and snapshot support (ZFS) can detect and repair such corruption as well as providing an extremely fast restoration from a backup. I just wish they’d hurry up and get us one that works in the Linux world.

  22. After I made my last posting above I wandered over to another Slugger thread:

“Regulation of the internet is not an issue that falls within my responsibility or, indeed, that of any part of our devolved Executive.”

Good grief, talk about life immitating art…….

There is no need for this site not to make a bit of money to support itself. Just put up more ads. There is plently of space down either side of the main text pane. Its just wasted at the min, especially in long threads.

Boring explanation Mick (Mo náire ort a mhac),

I thought it was attacked by crazed unionists fed up with a site that also featured Irish nationionalist/republicans. Then I thought maybe it was dissident republicans who would unite Ireland by smashing a website that held a lot of unionist views. Aw well.

  27. wee buns[8.59] It’s good to have slugger back alright, i was beginning to fear it was curtains. Talking about rants, There an evening given over to Harold Wilson on Thursday[Parliament ch], but sadly no sign of his famous ‘spongers’ speech from the last days of the UWC strike, being included..
