POTD – Billy Bragg and Occupy Belfast

Fri 28 October 2011, 11:32am

Walking past the camp yesterday i heard what sounded like a familiar voice. When i looked to check it was indeed Billy Bragg who was in town to play a gig at the Empire last night. He had called down to offer support to the camping protestors. Safe to say that any donations of food and provisions would be very welcome.

Five of them….that should do it!!! Dear Lord they even have the guitar and the air of a 1970′s Jesus Rock festival. Capitalism must be quaking in its boots

Bragg could have offered them all a room each in the west wing of his private mansion

    iluvni ,

Surely you’re not implying that Billy is somehow “bad” for having fans pay for his music. I have quite a few of his albums/cds, myself.

It’s up there with Louise Mensch’s argument that protesters are hypocrites for going to Starbucks.

Besides, sure isn’t the place already occupied?

Billy Bragg turns up and the usual suspects get sarcastic.
I suspect its because no one who has international respect in any field ever turns up at any of their protests, wonder why?

I must say there’s something particularly evocative about an “Occupy Belfast” banner being brandished by a former member of HM Armed Forces.

I walked past these guys the other day. They really are making no impression and it must be highly boring.
At least the London occupation has a bit of convoluted drama about it. I’m sure the joke has already been made that they should force Belfast Cathedral to close if they want to get any publicity.
Really, what’s the point (in Belfast)? I thought it looked embarrassing.

They are at Writers Square opposite St Annes cathedral and near the Police Ombudsmans office.

To be fair there were another 20 or so people at a meeting on the other side of the square
