Regular readers may recall Slugger’s interest in Haiti over the last year, including support for the Great Big Politics Pub Quiz fundraiser last October and Moochin’s pics and commentary from the Iron Market in Port-au-Prince and elsewhere.
Later this year Slugger will again be getting behind a few good causes in Haiti, hoping to raise awareness and some funds to help alleviate the situation of at least a few of this earthquake and corruption-stricken people. More about that in due course.
Meanwhile, if you’re interested in giving more than just money, here’s a plug for charity Haven Partnership (beneficiaries of the Politics Pub Quiz), who are holding a Build it Week volunteer information meeting in Belfast this evening.
This Autumn (Saturday 29th October – Sunday 6th November) Haven will hold its last Build it Week in the current format and they are recruiting 100 new volunteers to travel to Haiti for what they call “a life-changing experience”. The idea is that you go to Haiti for a week, team up with locals and a few expert builders and build lots of houses for people who need them desperately.
The volunteer information meeting will be held in the Carillion Energy Services building – look out for the HEAT sign – at Fuel House, 27-29 Sydenham Road, Belfast, BT3 9DH (close to the Odyssey in the Titanic Quarter). In attendance will be some of Haven’s veteran volunteers who will share their experiences. Meeting starts at 5.45pm, so you can go straight from work!
Edit by Moochin to add this Photo taken in an area of East Port-au-Prince which gives a good indication of the living conditions.
