“The Bloody Sunday city set to be UK capital of culture”

Can the Daily Mail story be true? The announcement will be made on the One Show – without Christine, on Thursday.

Its an ill wind that blows no good.
It will make the families feel so much better.
Perhaps they should erect a monument in the Fountain…parity of esteem and all that.
Everything evens out in the end, doesnt it?

“parity of esteem and all that.”

Well, Derry’s very own Gerry Anderson tried that this morning on his radio show. As usual, Wendy Austin trailed her show Talkback at 11.00. The first item she mentioned was an “Orange Fest”.

Gerry queried later why we don’t have a “Fenian Fest” as well. When Wendy began her show it was noticeable that she failed to thank Gerry for the handover, as she always does.

We still have a long way to go, boys and girls.

    Ah Wendy Austin……remind me.
Wasnt she the News Presenter who joked that an attack on a house in Coleraine (?) displaying a Derry GAA flag might not have been sectarian. “Probably Tyrone supporters”.
Hmmm……Wendy has of course got many journalism awards. ….cos shes brilliant an all. Her dad was a RAF pilot.

Of course the “economic windfall”…..local business in Stroke City getting to employ many more Czechs, Slovaks and Lithuanians and a boost for “PR companies” (whatever they are) is supposed to be the key thing.
For some the word “Culture” excuses any nonsense….especially if somebody else is paying for it.
And I get the distinct impression that many of the biggest enthusiasts for the “UK City of Culture” would be just as happy if it was the “UK Biggest Crime Rate” or “UK Ugliest City” or “UK Anything”……they just seem to like the “UK bit” more than the culture vultures love the “culture” bit.

We can I think sit back and enjoy the project implode. This is not a marriage made in heaven.
Now how do I set up a PR company ……might as well get some of that dosh.

  • I hope Derry does get the award and that everyone is big enough to enjoy the events and take advantage of any opportunities. Perhaps the road signs could be enlarged to highlight the roads to the border. We in the south need the potential business!

“Perhaps the road signs could be enlarged to highlight the roads to the border.”

I was on the border with Co Louth the other day. Some wag has graffiti’ed a road sign with red paint. It now reads “Mexico” :^)

LOL, dont the poor Arizonians have enough trouble with invading drug dealers etc. Who wants to dump our problems on them.

  • joeCanuck

I just wish the local lads wouldn’t turn the signs around. My wife and I drove the minor roads a few years back trying to get to Slane from somewhere south. We followed the signposts diligently and after an hour arrived back where we started.

Ye mean the Nationalist dominated Derry…. aka Free Derry…..aka Londonderry…. is looking to become the UK City of British Culture.
